Antibiotic may slow or prevent Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, study says

After testing the effects of the antibiotic minocycline on older roundworms that had a build-up of α-synuclein and amyloid-β, two proteins associated with Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease, researchers saw a decrease in the number of aggregation of the two proteins, according to a new study published Tuesday in eLife.

There must be a connection between antibiotics and PD.... many years ago I noticed that my grandmother's dementia seemed greatly reduced when on an antibiotic. My friend sees this happen in her mother too. You'd think researchers wd have a clue by now.

My grandmother's wd have been one used in the 70's -80's . I'll have to look them up and see what rings a bell..just got it ! acromycin and tetracyclines were used then.

Very interesting. I think this is worth a try. My google research mentions it has an anti inflammatory effect, and also that it helps depression which I find quite odd for an anti-biotic.

Need a prescription though.

My husband was diagnosed with acute viral bronchitis on Thanksgiving Day He was prescribed and is taking Cephalexin. Does it count?

I would be wary of antibiotics wiping out good bacteria though. Perhaps if you know you have a certain unhelpful bad bacteria treat that with a suitable antibiotic that is known to kill it then take probiotics and eat the right probiotics to replace good bacteria but I wouldn’t take a general broad spectrum long term antibiotic. Watch this series which is free this week. I am finding it very interesting.

Seconded. Antibiotics will damage your microbiome. Also excessive antibiotic use is a scourge which needs to be eliminated. It leads to resistant strains of bacteria like MRSA. The development of resistant bacteria strains is feared to lead to a situation where routine surgical procedures will cease to be safe due to risk of infection, in the way such procedures were hazardous prior to the discovery of Penecillin.

Whenever I see the words "MAY" or "CAN" or "POSSIBLY" it makes me cross. Patients are faced with this regularly. They are told about something that 'may' do this or that, they pay good money for it and after using it they find that it does not work. What can they do? Nothing! You were only told that it 'may' do so and if it doesn't, what the heck?

If we were to realize that none of the non-MAOb type medication we take for Pd does anything to slow down the progression of Pd, and if what we take does nothing to help any of our symptoms, there is nothing we can do about it. Nowhere does it say, "Will" or "CURE".

I'll stick to the fast walking which may make other people feel sick of hearing this but I give no guarantees.
