I ordered some magnesium taurate from Vitacost but it is 2,500 mg. Anyone know if this is too much. Thanks for your help.

Yes ! Way, way too much. Check out what others take.

I am taking the same form of magnesium and it is the correct amount to take! The problem with your Vitacost bottle is that it does not show that you are getting 200 mg of magnesium when you take 2,500 mg of magnesium taurate. The remainder is taurine and fillers. The bottle should last you two months at the recommended dose of two per day with food. I split my dose with one with breakfast and one with dinner. I use mag oil with the magnesium taurate in order to get more magnesium.

Thanks for your reply. I wonder if it hurts to have so many fillers and stuff in our capsules?

Well, with the magnesium you have, the other part is mostly taurine which is good for PD and the heart and the combination is able to target the brain so those are all pluses while the fillers are minor and you are only taking two a day.

cshamb,

So that there will be no mistake about how much magnesium you will get in their recommended dose, I contacted Vitacost on your behalf via chat and their representative said they will have a product specialist contact me via email to let me know the exact amount of magnesium in their recommended dose.

For contrast, here is a label from another popular supplier that gives you a better idea of the amount of magnesium :

..............................................................................................

Supplement Facts

Serving Size 2 Tablets

Servings Per Container 60

Amount Per Serving% Daily Value

Magnesium

(from 2,500 mg of magnesium taurate)

200 mg (elemental)48%

...........................................................................................

As you can see, the 2,500 mg of magnesium taurate, delivers 200 mg of magnesium and I suspect your product will be the same, but no need to guess, I will post Vitacost's answer as soon as they email me!

cshamb,

I just received a reply back from Vitacost and this is what they said :

.......................................................................................................................

Thank you for contacting Vitacost.com regarding our Vitacost Magnesium Taurate -- 2500 mg per serving - 120 Vegetarian Tablets.

This supplement contains 200 milligrams of elemental magnesium per serving or 100 milligrams per tablet.

If you need any further assistance in this matter, please feel free to contact us via chat, phone or by simply replying to this email.

Your business is much appreciated – thank you for being a Vitacost.com customer!

Friendly regards,

Brian Weisberg

As you can see, the recommended dose on the bottle of 2,500 mg delivers 200 mg

of magnesium which is below the daily allowance. The balance, I make up by using topical mag oil which is very useful for pain relief and relaxation of the muscles. You can also consider the magnesium from food intake as well.

Thank you so much for going to so much trouble it was very kind of you.

You're welcome!

It is important to know what we are taking so that we don't get too much or too little!

I was surprised to see that Vitacost did bot include such basic information on their product label.

I am also taking magnesium taurate, which is the form my doctor told me to take. She recommended 500 mg per day. My capsules are 150 mg each; I take 3 a day. The brand is Cardiovascular Research; I buy bottles of 180 on Amazon.

Under product description, it says:

Magnesium taurate is a fully reacted complex and not simply a blend of the two materials

Contains no corn, soy, yeast, wheat or other common food or chemical allergens

A quick preview of Amazon shows most the magnesium taurate products to be 150-250 mg; Vitacost is the only one showing thousands of mg. I can't address that, but do see another party has. I would check with your doctor.

Magnesium does relax your muscles and aids in sleeping, I find most nights when I take it in the evening or close to bedtime, I sleep better.

If you take too much Magnesium then you get the runs - at least that is the usual advice. Less obvious is "gastric hurry" - too frequent bowel movements; can be a problem with moving meds too quickly through the gastrointestinal tract and hence may reduce their uptake and effectiveness,

I read an article from a cardiologist and he said that 400mg is what we need .But of course not all are absorbed. My husband takes the solgar magnesium with B6 .This contains 400mg with 3 tablets and 25mg of B6

Tht is the amount of mag taurate, not the elemental level of magnesium. That amount of Mag taurate delivers 400 mgs of Magnesium which is the daily value. So it is ok to take it.

Magnesium taken by mouth is not fully absorbed. You may get half or less of the mgs stated on the label.
