Question about Vitamin B1

Hello. I have a question about vitamin B1. I just realized that B1 vitamins can be different. Some in the ingredients say thiamine mononitrate, some say thiamin hydrochloride and some like Solgar company say Vitamin B1 (as thiamin hcl). Does that mean that solgar sells "natural" vitamin B1? Also one of the ingredients of Solgar B1 vitamins is silica. Doing some research I think this is not a very good component. " Why is Silica Hazardous?

Silica, often referred to as quartz, is a very common mineral. It is found in many materials common on construction sites, including soil, sand, concrete, masonry, rock, granite, and landscaping materials.

The dust created by cutting, grinding, drilling or otherwise disturbing these materials can contain crystalline silica particles. These dust particles are very small. You cannot see them. This respirable silica dust causes lung disease and lung cancer. It only takes a very small amount of airborne silica dust to create a health hazard."

What company B1 would you recommend. My dad is currently taking Spring Valley B1, but I think this is a synthetic version vs natural. Thank you.

Have you thought about buying Thiamine powder instead of capsules dissolve it in squash then you don’t have to ‘eat’ the capsules? 😀

Thiamine HCI is what Dr. Costantini recommends for the oral protocol. The bulk powder avoids the fillers and gelatin caps, but it is quite bitter and will have to be mixed with something sweet to ameliorate the bitterness. I have used gatorade for this purpose. Vitacost also sells thiamine hci in a 300 capsule jar for about $30. They are easier to swallow than the tablets.

Thank you for this info. I am just trying to figure out what is the difference between thiamine mononitrate, thiamin hydrochloride and thiamin hcl. I think HCL is just another abbriviation for B1.

HCI is just the abbreviation for hydrochloride which is the correct oral form.

Silica inhalation from an encapsulated medicine is not a danger. It is an essential mineral for bone stength. See my writing here:

I have been in the nutritional supplement business for over 30 years. Each vitamin has its own uique chemical structure that defines it as that particular substance. Virtually all vitamins are synthesized, but they are chemically identical to the natural substance. Many vitamins such as thiamine have a chemical group attached to them for a variety of reasons including stability, absorption etc. The amount declared on the label should indicate the quantity of the actual vitamin. For instance the a 100 mg thiamine tablet may read Thiamine (as Thiamine HCl) ...... 100mg.

It is very expensive to get vitamins in supplements from foods. There are some from yeast, but they are weak and many people do not want to deal with yeast.

Silica is used in very low amounts to help the material flow into a tablet press or capsule.
