Never come across dystonia of the hip Janet, can you describe it? Do the medicines ( eg sinemet) relieve the pain?

I have spoken to the dystonia society and they haven't either! I def get dystonia in my feet, they claw and twist and had assumed my hip was the same. The area goes into a sort of muscle spasm and I the leg can go rigid

Hi Janet, just an anecdotal story to throw into the mix. I had left hip replaced about nine years ago. After physical therapy I recovered nicely for a 64 year old male. But then about 3 years on I began to get numbness, weakness and muscle spasms in left thigh, sometimes causing my left leg to collapse under me. I saw a neuro and then a neurosurgeon. He identified a problem at L4/5 and performed a quick laminectomy as well as adding a clip to stabilize the area. For the most part, that feeling you question as dystonia went away. Just for info, two years ago I was dx’d with PD and do have dystonia in my calves, so I can identify with your feelings. For what it’s worth it might be wise to scan your back before undergoing a hip replacement!

Hi Janet,

That is interesting. Just some thoughts. If this pain is a dystonic pain then that is muscle pain rather than joint pain. I would have thought replacing the joint would not solve it. That was why I asked if you got relief with sinemet..

i suffered from osteoarthritis of the hip for 2 years before my neurologist recommended to see surgeon. I had hip replacement and had 4 weeks of special physical therapy to address recovery while suffering from PD. The surgery improved my quality of life very noticeably.
