How to take Mannitol

There seems to be some debate over the amount of Mannitol that actually manages to survive the stomach, get to the intestines etc etc. Would it be an idea to put a teaspoon of it into one's mouth and let it dissolve there? Just wondered.

I take 1 tablespoon in my 1st cup of coffee around 6am. It seems to help my sense of smell so far.

Well I’ve been doing similar but have read that the amount that gets into the bloodstream is small so I’m wondering other routes.

i take it by the tablespoon and swallow it (its like eating a spoonful of sugar). and then i drink some water. i would think it wouldnt make a difference either way - dissolved in something or straight off the spoon. maybe if you could hold some under your tongue, it would be absorbed faster???

Good idea Jeeves. I think the absorption may increase this way. According to Drug bank. CA ,

"Approximately 7% of ingested mannitol is absorbed during gastrointestinal perfusion in uremic patients."

I previously posted a theoretical way to make mannitol work better (through better absorption) and do not know at what dose of DHA is required (or if it will actually increase the absorption in a person), but it worth a look:

I take mannitol in a black coffee after breakfast- as per instructions. Coffee is meant to help it cross blood/brain barrier. It works for me. Jeeves- personally i think you need to make a choice and go for it- there is so much advice that i think you need to just do it, as it a sugar the only side effect is a sweet expensive wee! Can take up to 4 months to work but for me was 10 days. Good luck havee faith in your choices

Energy levels are increased. So far today i have walked 2 miles with dog went to neighbours and scrubbed her front steps and patio and just helped unload delivery of wood- now for lunch! Mood is baack to usual glass half full, i have PD but have to move on and adapt as needed. Dexterity has returned to right arm and hand- not totally but i can massage and usefingers again. All life is challenge we just have different ones. I highly recommend mannitol.

thanks alaynedellow - i have been taking mannitol since november. i dont have energy problems, except during "off" time - of which i have minimal amounts. i noticed that i feel sharper/clearer mentally, and i have my sense of smell back. its good to know how your dexterity has improved.

A note on constipation- suffered for over 10 years regularly using isphagual husk i moved to France 18 months ago and bingo constipation only happens when i visit the UK- something in the water?

Does it reduce your tremors ?

I don't have a tremor Marcet. But still its pretty effective for me.

I've been on it for about 2 1/2 months and began to see improvements within a few days. First, let say there has been no change in tremor. However, I've had some amazing improvements in fine motor skills.

The following things were impossible or nearly impossible before mannitol, and have now mostly disappeared:

Putting a key in a lock and opening it.

Tie my shoes

Putting the dog's leash on

Putting on seat belt

Writing legibly

Also, my energy is better. And according to my friends and family, my voice is much improved!

While it's not the cure to Parkinson's, I'll gladly take it. BTW - I'm not coffee drinker so I dissolve the Mannitol (1 heaping teaspoon) into vitamin water every morning and sip on it while working.

On another topic - coloring books for grown ups is all the rage here in the States. (For anyone - not just PDers.) I have found it very helpful to help keep my handwriting its best and it's supposed to be a relaxation technique as well.

Oopss - I almost forgot regarding Mannitol - I am completely off of laxatives since being on Mannitol! Now that's saying something from someone who was on Mirilax EVERY day for years! They say that a side effect of Mannitol can be diarrhea! I say, - I can love with that!

Nice one. I too don’t have energy issues and took if for 2/3 months without noticing much difference sorry to say but I think I’ll go back. One problem I have theoretically with Mannitol is that l read time and time again that sugars and presumably substitutes are somewhat poisonous for the brain?
