Constipation: I need help with the bathroom... - Cure Parkinson's
Constipation
Constipation can be kept at bay with high fibre diet and water. eg. high fibre cereals, wholemeal bread, vegetables (leave potato skins on), salad, fresh fruit, dried fruit (sultanas, prunes etc). Drink a lot of water with meals, and when taking tablets.
With Parkinson's you sometimes have to be careful as a high fibre diet can cause a blockage in the large intestine as food gets process at a much slower rate
There soluable and insoluable fiber. The latter is just that...it doesn’t dissolve. In the case of slow mobility as often in PD, this fiber remains too long in the stomach and accumulate and form something like hair balls in cats. Those can block the entrance to the intestine.
Please be careful with the well meaning but sometimes ineffective or dangerous suggestions.
Some of the foods suggested are gas producing which is a frequent problem in people with slow motility. When food lies around in the stomach or anywhere else too long it ferments, hence the fermentation gasses.

I also use an herbal tea that is a laxative. The one that you can get in Walmart is called Smooth Move
Soon after starting thiamine HCL it resulted in normal, easy bowel movement, no constipation. I started T-HCL to beat Parkinson's. It helped with all the symptoms. My dose is 2g 2x a day. I am into my sixth week and no constipation.
Same experience.
Hi i had surgery in 2008 was wirh Parkinson diagnose in 2009 and I'm in a lot of pain from the the surgery take hydrocodone and very constipated
How often can i take coconut oil for m constipation?
Otherwise, a more aggressive approach, would be exercise/walking, psyllium fiber, flaxseed oil, and some magnesium before bed. Plus, MiraLAX can be taken for longer periods than typical laxatives.
Maybe time to try mannitol. See CliniCrowd.com.
I take 3 tablespoons of coconut oil early in the morning. In about one hour, my bowel moves.
Do you take the coconut oil straight off of the spoon or mix it with cereal etc.,
I second all these comments. Do the belt and braces. You can take the coconut oil in Coffee with Mannitol. Take the Thiamine HCL with water separately (they don't mix). And also make sure you do enough exercise, eat broccoli, and apples.
What helps me is MagO7 by aerobic life. I have taken up to 5 in the evening but find that 3 is enough now. I just take occasionally and it always works. Lots of water is important.
This is one of the few PD symptoms I don't get. I put it down to prunes at least 6 a day, lxlicorice tea or syncolein( mannitol) gives you a lot of gas thou
i dont have this symptom either. but at a nursing home i used to work at, we gave the residents hot prune juice (about 4 oz) at bedtime, if they hadnt moved their bowels in 2 days. and it worked like a charm the next morning. something about it being hot, made it more effective.
There's a yoga position which helps... Lie on your back and bend your legs bringing your knees towards your chin. Stay there for a bit of time.
The absolute healthy and non laxative help is l-glutamine, an amino acid recognized as healing the gut. The best form of it with some other stuff thrown in is Ageless GI Recovery, By Ageless Nutrition online. It is a nicely flavored powdered form...easy to take and will do the job while keeping your gut healthy. We live on a retirement community and due to the good effects on my PD husband, I have recommended it to a number of older folks, some of whom have suffered from constipation their whole lives. Works for them and I am now their Gut Princess.
I also like Iberogast, one of the most purchased and recommended products in Germany to alleviate gas and bloating. For me it also acts to move the bowels. 20 drops in water is a dose but I found after using it for awhile that I could reduce it to 10....I didn’t need that effect which I get already from Ageless GI. Also online.
Parkinson's tries out the G.I. tract from one end to the other. If you constipation problem is due to excessive dryness I recommend sodium docusate also known as Colace. It adds moisture to the stool and is nonirritating.
We use a product called Calm. It is a magnesium powder that works great by making a tea in the evening.
My brother does some of these but also takes a probiotic a few times a week which helps with motility. You would have to experiment on how often you would take it if you wanted to try it.

Old European remedy - prunes ...
My husband has a protein shake every AM and I add a capful of MiraLax to it and it works like a charm for constipation. He is on many pills and the pharmacist recommended that he use MiraLax every day to help this problem.
Hi Sello, i suffered a bit from this problem and my sister, a qualified nurse, suggested that I should drink at least 1.5 litres of water a day, but drink it gradually throughout the day. She also suggested (told me) that I should get off my bum and do some exercise every day. Her preference was brisk walking for half an hour to 40 minutes every day. I do walk now and again, but the exercise I have found most effective in addressing constipation is hip rotations.
So with your feet shoulder width apart, place hands on hips and then bend your knees to assume a comfortably challenging crouch position and start slowly rotating your hips though the four compass points - 10 times in one direction then 10 times in the reverse direction. By this time your thighs will probably feel on fire, so give it a rest. Do this exercise 3 or 4 times a day. I think it is good if we can apply solutions to these peripheral issues which accompany PD without resorting to medication if at all possible. All the best for a speedy return to normality.
Yes I'm sick of being in my bathroom too, seems like every 10 Minutes, and often for a long time. the only thing I do is eat lots of prunes for snacks, I've tried pitted prunes but, too expensive and too easy to eat too many, but you have to like them.
I also eat a lot of dried dates, they are pretty cheap pitted, ( in Australia ) and one of the so called super foods. Some days I don't eat much, and things like dates keep my nutrition up.
My neurologist gave me his special Ranchero recipe of one part prune juice, one part applesauce and one part bran. I use oat bran as I'm gluten sensitive. I mix a half cup or each and have a couple of spoons full at breakfast - last 8 to 10 days. I drink lots of water, eat a couple of prunes and take a probiotic. Also do daily aerobic exercising, stretching, etc. Constipation is my worst PD issue.
I drink a glass of water each morning. Best thing out for constipation.
