Cough

Lately I have had a lot of plegm in back of throat and a constant cough. Sometimes it feels like a heart beat in my throat and my ear. Anyone else had this problem it may not be pd related but I thought I would check with the group before going to the Doc. Thank you.

My husband is getting over a bad cold I shared with him with severe coughing. He coughed much harder than I did and did not produce the phlegm I did. I am guessing his throat muscles are not able to expel the crud out. I have asked him to practice his loud voice exercises to see if his cough will be more productive.

Loud voices exercises are important for swallowing, so I think they could be important in getting phlegm out also.

My mother, without PD, had these symptoms and it turned out to be walking pneumonia. Antibiotics cured it.

A cough that is not resolved quickly is best checked by a physician to rule out an infection or other condition that needs to be addressed medically. That being said it may be helpful to cut out temporarily mucous producing foods such as wheat and dairy. Also a neti pot or saline nasal spray can be helpful to reduce mucous.

Best wishes for improvement soon. May you have a Healthy and Happy 2018!

After you have ensured you do not have pneumonia or additional medical issues, discuss with your doctor to see if you are candidate for a prescription for voice therapy. The one my husband has participated in is called Lou Silverman Loud Voice Therapy(LSVT). It is designed to help People with Parkinson's to continue to be able to communicate. Their voice becomes soft and swallowing becomes an issue causing choking.

There is a LSVT BIG for movement issues. It helps keep walking, hand movement and posture functioning. You can google LSTV Big and LSVT Loud for more information.

They offer free mini evaluations when they have LSVT Patient Symposiums.

Insurance may cover most of the cost of the full course of therapy. Some local Parkinson's local chapters have free group classes. My husband takes a tune up series of therapy once a year and our insurance covers it. This really helps him speak loud and plainly and swallow much better. It is worth inquiring to see if can help your throat muscles clear phlegm from the back of your throat.

This has been a good program to keep my hubby functioning.
