Good Afternoon, I was recently reading an article on another PD site about the meds my doc gave me for the tremors, it is propolol. The article stated that propolol will give you PD. I was absolutely blown away and angry. Has anyone heard this before??

Do you mean propranolol? I never heard of propolol.

Propanolol is used for high blood pressure.

I tried a search on your spelling and the only thing close is propofol that is used in anesthesia

Propranolol is a beta blocker which my husband took for several years for a non Parkinson's post op tremor. When he subsequent developed PD he started taking Madopar and stopped the propranolol.

Beckey is right: propranolol can be used for benign essential tremor (BET), but can cause a lot of nasty side effects and even make tremor worse. One reviewer here developed "whole body tremor" while using it above a certain dose--

Wonder why your doctor thinks it would be appropriate for PD-related tremors.

Those are drugs that can cause Parkisonism not PD

Do you mean propranolol? That works for most folks whose tremor is due, not to PD but to Essential Tremor. I have certainly never heard it can "lead to" PD!

I have taken propranolol for years at a low dose - 10 mg x2. it calms me and consequently reduces my pd tremor. As my pd does not seem to be progressing, I'm not at the moment worried about the recent posts about it advancing pd.

No havent heard that but I'm on 40 mg daily for my Heart Rate. My BP is low to normal.

I'm also on MADOPAR 125 every 2/3 hours. The Dyskenisia arrives soon after swallowing this drug.

I would like to try halving the Heart drug and eventually giving it away completely.

I'm curious, was this other post written by a pwp or was it a magazine article or a research report.....

You say "you were blown away and angry" i am thinking angry with your Dr for prescribing it? Actually I would be angry with the poster for scaring me with incorrect info.

I sometimes wonder with some posts on HU if a person has miss heard or wrongly interpret the meaning of what they were told. We all do at times

Propanolol (a heart drug) is used for essential tremor but some people with pd also find it helpful. It is the actors pill for stage fright. I took some when I had an exam to do when newly diagnosed.

I agree with you that we should all be cautious about what we recommend or express reservations on regarding meds and others. Something may not work for me but be great for you. PD is so different. Only universal I see is exercise is good.

The concern here is that using drugs like propanolol (otherwise known as beta blockers) means you're more likely to develop parkinson's. By the same logic, anyone on a beta blocker who has parkinsons (or synucleinopathy) could very well see a faster progression of their disease. We are referring to Simon's blog post here

It's kind of in depth, but basically, a good bit of evidence suggests that taking a beta blocker will result in an INCREASE in the expression of genes that put you at risk of of developing PD.

In my humble opinon, there is enough evidence here that you should probably stay away from beta blockers. Work with your doctor and find another class of drug instead.

Unfortunately, Im also taking a beta blocker because a couple years ago I had a heary attack. I was on a different beta blocker, when the neurologist changed it to Propranolol. He said by using Propranolol I was killing 2 birds with 1 stone so to speak. I was getting the beta blocker and I would receive relief for my tremors.
