Cracked fingertips

Before diagnosis with PD I developed extremely dry skin and my finger tips would split. My GP picked up on it as one sign that something was not right with my health. That was 2 years ago. I have been taking Sinemet 25/100 x 3 for 9 months . My finger tips are now so dry that they split and peel to the extent that I don't think I have any fingerprints left. Since it began before medication I'm assuming it is to do with PD but I wonder if the meds make it worse. Either way does anyone have any suggestions for Dry skin relief? I already use handcreams constantly.

Well, for what it's worth... there is a Veterinary product called Animax ointment. I call it the miracle ointment. It is antibacterial and it does have some steroid. You would have to go to a veterinarian and pick some up. You could wash your hands very well and try putting some on on your fingertips a very small amount. Do not put any other stuff on your hands for a couple days, do use it twice a day. Try to put as little water as possible on your hands. It should start to heal your fingertips. My family has used it for years, don't even remember which dog we used this on the very first time Mary

Thanks, Mary. I'll speak to vet when we take the cat for her check up.

I think it has something antifungal also. We all use it.

I take Coconut oil orally, but I've read topically it can be good for dry skin.

Thanks, laglag. I already use coconut butter on my skin. The oil just coats the surface (& everything else I touch) without soaking in. Maybe I should try it orally. How much do you recommend?

For approximately 4-5 yrs. I've taken 3 Tbls/day & it helps my overall mood & gives me a little more energy but I don't see where it's helped my skin. I believe Coco butter is different than pure organic coconut oil. You might Google it & see.

Thank you. I'll check it out.

Just a note; I've tried to use Coconut Oil for my dry facial skin that was sloughing off, but to no avail.

However, it's a great moisturizer so it may work for you. Good luck!

(Not a paid commercial): My PT noticed that the dry skin on my face was sloughing off daily. I can't shave myself due to my PD, so my wife tries to shave me after I let my beard grow out a few days. So, my face is really dry.

My fingernails are ok, unlike yours, but "Ultra Bland" (lotion) was suggested that it might help me.

I haven't bought it yet, but I will probably order it tomorrow. I'm told that you can also get free samples in stores that carry it.

Perhaps it may help both of us.

That's an easy one to try. We have a lush store in town. Many thanks.

Google will provide scores of external remedies. But maybe a big contributor is a vitamin deficiency and you need to properly nourish your skin from the inside?

Hi Dumpelkin, I did wonder about nutritional deficiency, but take multivitamins, drink loads of water and in general have a very good diet. And my diet has not changed, though my hands have got worse. I had done a lot of research before posting and wasted a small fortune on creams. I intend to follow a couple of suggestions from this site and if they fail I will have to see a dermatologist.

Tea Tree oil but you have to be diligent .

Good suggestion, thanks, but I'm allergic to it. Trying Argon oil today. Will let everyone know if I find a cure.
