accumulation of a lot of exposure to radiation in environment may shorten telemeres/alter genes.

just read about k30 in bananas and uranium in kitty litter (mined bentonite) and some granite as in tiles, radon........significantly, radiation has the most damaging effect on cells that turnover quickly, like the intestinal cells. inability of these cells to turnover are symptom of radiation sickness.
