Speech problems mainly

Stonroy profile image

Husband has not been diagnosed yet (waiting on Neurologist appointment) but been given Sinemet 3 times daily. His speech is the main problem which occurred when he was on Venaflaxine anti depressant and has continued when he was taken off cold turkey. Slow walking came into it when he was put on Lyrica in October . Any suggestions please?

The full link says extactlyi what the app is

The app works on the same principle as much dearer speech therapist devices.

The man in question has Parkinsons and had become a recluse because of speech difficulties,

I have passed this on several times but never heard of any outcome one way or the other. If it works for anyone at all its worth publicising.

Hi Stonroy. It is difficult to give you any advice with such a little history. I get lots of flack for telling people my story, but that does not detract from its value.

I was diagnosed with Pd in 1992. My symptoms started in 1963 and got worse and worse until I was finally diagnosed. Since 1994 I have been doing Fast Walking and by 1998 most of my visible symptoms had disappeared. By 2002., I was able to come off all Pd medication, and have continued to be medication-free ever since. I am 82 years old now and live a 'normal' life, full of purpose!

You may think that your husband will not be able to do Fast Walking, but I have found that not to be true with many other patients. I go all over the world showing people how to walk properly, with only three exceptions among hundreds of seriously affected patients. Above all else, walking costs nothing and everybody's health improves, when they do fast walking, including yours.

View my website - reverseparkinsons.net and contact me from there.

Good luck

Hi JohnPepper,

I was a super skeptic of the benefits of exercise to help with a major disease like Parkinsons. My husband, 51 improved his diet and started walking every day and his symptoms were sooo much better. Unfortunately he battles with apathy...so he has sunk back into his old eating habits and no exercise, but I did see the difference that lifestyle can make for Parkies. The snow banks here in Canada make outdoor activity a little challenging as well.

Thanks for the uplifting message.

Hi Thegimba. I'm so sorry to hear this. Lethargy is very common and needs to be understood. Dopamine is not just a neurotransmitter! It is also a feel-good chemical or hormone. If we have a shortage of dopamine then not only do we lose the ability to perform certain movements but we lack the motivation to do anything.

I am a very determined person and I found that, even though I did not have the energy to do anything, I just did it and very soon I was able to carry on as if everything was fine. Just getting going was the problem.

See if you can remind him of just how well he felt, when he was doing the exercise, and then remind him of what he can look forward to if he does not exercise!

Good Luck!

Hi TheGimba. I forgot to ask if your husband can't walk indoors in a shopping mall or an indoor sports arena?

If I try fast waliking, I fall over.

JohnPepper profile image
JohnPepper in reply toandrewij

Hi Andrewij. I usually suggest that you start the fast walking with somebody holding your left arm in his/her right arm. In this way, you can avoid falling until you are able to walk fast enough to avoid falling. You should also do balance exercises. If you contact me at johnpepper@telkomsa.net I will send you a lot of information on the sunject. You can also go to my website - reverseparkinsons.net

Good luck!

I do walk 2/3 miles a day at a steady pace already.

JohnPepper profile image
JohnPepper in reply toandrewij

Hi andrewij. It is my understanding that walking flat-out causes your brain to produce a growth factor, which repairs the damaged brain cells. Those are the brain cells that are damaged by Pd, and repairing those brain cells reverses your Pd symptoms.

You should not walk flat-out every day. You should only walk flat-out every second day, so that you give your muscles a chance to recover.

Walking normally does not do this for you!

Although John's storay is not reproducible for people I'be met and heard from, it is undoubtedly true that the scientific evidence is there for exercise being a 'treatment' that will help increase blood flow to the brain cells involved with Parkinson's and increase their readiness to take up the drugs given.

A physical exercise while learning something new iseems to be the best sort, so a new physical hobby like dance, golf, etc.

Does the sinemet work?

park_bear profile image

I second this question. Does the Sinemet help him in any way? Because if it does not it may not be Parkinson's.

Why lyrica? Sounds like you need a good functional medicine doc.

Hi there your husbands doctor/consultant must be pretty sure of the yet to be confirmed diagnosis.

I am on nine sinemrt plus per day diagnosed 2013 at age 48.

I am also on a range of other medications such as amantadine tamsulosin lansoprazole venlafaxine and stexerol-D3 vitamin D

As yet I have no speech problems nor to I have a noticeable tremor I do know that the speech is a problem further down the road so I would advise your husband to seek out a speach therapist sooner rather than later as unfortunately it is a progressive designer disease affecting each one in different ways.

I suffer from pain in my left leg that gets really bad about 8pm each evening. My leg goes into spasm and no painkiller that I've tried helps. I do find that a large whiskey taken neat does within minutes has an almost immediate effect relaxing the muscles and getting rid of the pain. Now I'm not saying everyone should start consuming whiskey meat but for me it is the only pain relief I get.

Only saying but the best of luck to you in the future. Henry.

He doesn't have any leg pain at all and no tremors - only what he describes as a "tight band" in his calves some of the day and then when he has an Epsom salt bath it goes for a few hours. Doc wont put him through for speech therapy until we've seen a Neurologist ! :(

Whenever I took those SSRI's type of ant-depressants my lower tremor lower jaw increased significantly! 1. How can you talk normally when bottom jaw is moving 90 mph. Other medications too can cause this too, still trying figure this one out. Tried four of those kind of SSRI'S over a four year period. None of THEM I could take. The only antidepressant I can take is Wellbutrin 300 mg.

Thanks dhill - we are tryhing to really focus that his problems are through withdrawal of both cold turkey Venaflaxine and Lyrica tappering as so many people seem to have his symptoms on these meds. Private Neurologist on 16th Jan

Hi Stonroy,

Sorry to hear your having speech problems

my speech was horrible, very low and people could not understand me.

Well I started to sing karaoke and you wouldn't believe the volume I have now. I do karaoke every day.

Go to you tube type in karaoke and the name of any song you would like and sing it up.

You can go to free singing lessons and do the exercises they have , like lip thrills, tongue thrills, ma ma ma ma ma ma etc

let me know how it works if he checks it out

Cheers Alice ( Alleymay 57)
