Dandruff
Hi Maryque,
For dandruff I would try to stay away from alot of commercial dandruff shampoos that contain alot of chemicals bit if your dandruff is severe enough that Holistic approaches don't seem to be doing the trick I recommend Nizoral. It is sold in most stores and to get the normal strength and more severe cases they make an xtra strength formula but you must obtain a prescription for this.
Here are a few alternatives I would try first tho:
ASPIRIN:
contains the same active ingredient (salicylic acid) as many medicated dandruff shampoos. Keep flaking in check by crushing two aspirins to a fine powder and adding it to the normal amount of shampoo you use each time you wash your hair.Leave the mixture on your hair for 1-2 minutes, then rinse well and wash again with plain shampoo.
TEA TREE OIL SHAMPOOS:
Shampoos with just 5 percent tea tree oil significantly improves the severity of dandruff and are sold in most stores. You can also add just a few drops of just the oil in your favorite shampoo. Usually the oil is easy to find at your local Health food market.
COCONUT OIL:
once again here it is....
Before showering, massage 3-5 tablespoons of coconut oil into your scalp and let sit for about an hour. Shampoo normally. You can also look for a shampoo that already contains coconut oil.
FOR BRUNETTES: APPLE CIDER VINEGAR
Mix a quarter cup apple cider vinegar with a quarter cup water in a spray bottle and spritz on your scalp. Wrap your head in a towel and let sit for 15 minutes to an hour, then wash your hair as usual. Do this twice a week. It also brings out nice tones and highlights in your hair which is an added bonus.
FOR BLONDES: LEMON
Just massage 2 tablespoons lemon juice into your scalp and rinse with water. Then stir 1 teaspoon lemon juice into 1 cup water and rinse your hair with it. Repeat this daily until your dandruff disappears. Lemon's acidity helps balance the pH of your scalp, which helps keeps dandruff at bay. Please note that lemon juice may lighten your hair esp when out in the sunshine alot.
Hopes these ideas help you.
Love, Darkflower
Thanks for the suggestions Hidden - some I knew of but others, I didn't. My husband has tried all sorts of different shampoos but presently he's using baby shampoo which seems to alleviate his itchy scalp.
you are welcome glenandgerry
Hi are you sure that it's dandruff and not a dry scalp? Using dandruff shampoos can make it worse.
Yes i get flakey skin where I never had before and it is related to PD. The meds seemed to help but it is still there to some extent, Eyebrows, nose and forehead.
I also have PD and have seen a Dermatologist for itchy scalp ! She prescribed for dandruff (she said I have but I never noticed any flakes) ketoconazole 2% shampoo I am using twice a week , it has helped so far . She said I could use any shampoo the other days , and I would love to find out what healthy natural shampoo you all are using ?
Bouffere85 This is a strange condition, often some remedies work for certain people, but there is no universal 'cure' ! I have severe dry scalp and dandruff - my scalp used to get so horrible and itchy - I have tried pretty much all OTC and prescribed shampoo - nothing worked. Currently I am coping much better with the following:
1) The Body Shop - Ginger Anti Dandruff shampoo (I use every other day - leave it for 3-5 min on scalp before washing) - this is the only shampoo that works for me !
2) I also use Neutrogena T/Gel 2 in 1 Shampoo & Conditioner - evry other day.
Combination of these two have so far been extremely effective for me. If this does not work for you, you probably stick to what works for you i.e. ketoconazole.
