Does anyone have low motility of esophagus? My esophagus is nonfunctional.. I had drainage of sinuses into my mouth and esophagus. I have to expel this. Does anyone have this and/or know treatment?

The motility in my esophagus is definitely slower than it used to be. Sometimes it spasms and I have a painful time swallowing food or even saliva! My saliva production seems to be hyper active especially at night. Any one else with these symptoms?

When I was losing my ability to swallow I would feel a lump in my throat after I swallowed.

I have a similar symptom Dallas59 . I don’t currently have neurologist . First one seemed to ignore this symptom when I pointed it out . I will see what my next one thinks when I get one . This is a very annoying thing makes it difficult to brush my teeth as saliva rushes into my mouth and kind of chokes me . I do not have trouble swallowing most food just pills . Good luck and thanks for posting .

I don’t have saliva but very sticky mucus that starts bubbling up if I ignore it. When I cough to expel it can be halfway down my throat choking me. It takes a couple of hours to cough it up. Have to wait until June to see esophageal specialist.

N Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) is an otc mucolytic, antioxidant and anti inflammatory that may be worth a try to try and calm the esophagus. It should thin the mucous and make the cough more productive and easier to make it down the esophagus.

If I may add, AMBROXOL is another option, but especially speech therapy. My husband's current speech therapist works differently than his first one: He gave my husband a balloon and a babble blast solution and asked him to blow the balloon and babbles 5 times each, at least 5 times/a day. He started last week.

In my opinion, your first question to your prospective neurologist should be "What can you tell me about swallowing. If the don't have a lot to say, and consider the topic extremely important . . . They have no business treating PwP's and I'd make a very fast exit and seek a competant neurologist elsewhere.

Hi Dallas, have you tried peppermint EO (essential oil). A drop mixed up with honey and spooned gently in to your mouth may relieve you and be of help.

Bauer makes an herbal remedy called Iberogast, it seems to work for me for low motility.

My husband had the same problem. We went to a gastroentorogist 300 miles from home to get evaluated for a POEM procedure but covid blocked the plan then we found a local gastro who said he could do botox for the esophagus to relax muscles. He couldn't eat without throwing up and he started going downhill. Doctor scheduled the procedure the last minute one day before Thanksgiving. All went well and next day he started eating. It was coded as gastroperesis but it could also be achalasia. Anyway, he's doing fine now but it may be repeated if necessary.

Glad you were able to find a solution. Covid has definitely made it difficult to see specialists. I have to wait until June to see a doctor with esophageal experience.

It's easy to find a gastroenterologist esp. in a big city like Dallas, it doesn't have to be a neurologist because he or she will refer you anyway to a gastro. Anybody doing colonoscopy should be ble to help you. Insist on seeing one without referral(depends on your insurance) if it's affecting your well-being.

It's outpatient about 3 hrs. total. Make sure to ask if they do botox. Not every gastro does it.

Chewing gum, sucking sugar free candies, and swallowing frequently during the day will strengthen esophageal muscles.

That's what I hope they will do. Is it day surgery?
