There is very little evidence regarding weight loss and drug use but there is huge evidence on gastric absorption and weight loss meaning that although you may be eating substantial calories you may not be absorbing what you are eating so it pays to double up on your calorie intake and develop what is known as grazing eating small regular intake throughout the day. Chocolate puddings cakes full fat milk are all recommended. However you should also see your doctor to exclude any other underlaying reason for the weight loss which may not be parkinsons related.

My husband has also lost a lot of weight, almost 28 lbs, over last six months..he has chronic back dystonia also ..

His PD nurse explains why PD patients lose weight, to us., as you said it is because, the body no longer absorbs the nutrients from the food.. He is on a high calorie diet.. And what we call a grazer between meals.. And 2 drinks of high protein / vitamin / supplements., called Complan..

His weight has remained steady, since the start of a new regime..but I have to be here . To make sure he is following, it..as he forgets to eat or drink..

I get very frustrated that although he goes to physio.. He also needs to follow up at home..and trying to coax him to do so is not easy,

most of his activities have all but ceased.. It's so hard to watch the awful deterioration this decease inflicts on you're nearest and dearest..

I'm sometimes at a loss to know how to cope..

As his only carer, I have health issues .. But still have the need to do some solcialising.. But my husband. Is too tired to go anywhere ..

I lost a lot of weight with ropinerole because it killed my appetite. It definitely could be med related. If your intake is reduced you might try adding a supplement drink like boost or ensure. If your caloric intake isn't lower than it probably has more to do with avsorbtion.

If you have tremors, dystonia or dyskinesias you are burning more calories than usual. I have gained 22 lbs since DBS due to the elimination of dystonia and dyskinesia.

Wellbutrin will make you lose weight

That has certainly been true for me.

For a while, they had me taking neurontin which really packed on the pounds. It was not effective at quieting down the tremor so I went off it, and the weight came off.

hi rajbhal,

i had lost about 30 lbs. and was down to 101 lbs. and i didn't know how far down you could go in weight till you couldn't walk anymore. my husband went to the health food store, and found a powder that was strictly for gaining weight. . and my doctor told me that he drank carnation essentials, which you mix one cup of milk with four ice cubes, then two tbls. of ground flax seed ground into powder. and one packet of the essentials which comes in different flavors. after that is mixed well, with the blender, i add two big scoops of vanilla ice cream, and blend again. i like to really blend it , as that takes away the brain freeze. warms it up a bit. and how each day for lunch i have one of those for lunch, and then take my meds. and i'm now up to 112 lbs. and holding pretty much at that weight . and feeling better. no longer dropping weight. that's the best part. good luck. to you.

I HA VE LOST A LOT OF WEIGHT ( I HAVE PSP NOT PARKINSONS AS SUCH BUT IT SI SIMILAR IN THE EFFECTS IT CAN HAVE)

BUT,,,MY WEIGHT LOSS IS I THINK PARTLY THE PSP BTY MAINLY AS TTHE 1ST REPLY SAID BECAUSE OF NON-GASTRIC ABSORPTION OF FOOD B4 IT PASSES OUETOF THE BODYT

I TEND TO POO A COUPLE FO TIMES B4 BREAKFAST THEN AGAIN AFTER BREAKFAST AND THE SAME AT LUNCHTIME

IF I AM LUCKY I CAN HOLD IN MY DINNER UNTIL THE NEXT A/M AND HTEN IT STARTS AGAIN.

THE INCONTINENCE NURSE SAYS MHY DIET IS FINE = NO NEED FOR MOVICOL AS I HAVE CHOCOLATE /RED WINE AND PRUNES - ALTHO I HAVE NOT HAD,THE PRUNES FOR 2 WEEKS NOW& DO NOT FEEL ANHY WORSE FOR IT

(I ALSO NOW HAVE OSTEOPOROSIS SO NEED TO WATCH MY WEIGHT LOSS AND ENSURE IT SI NTO THE BONES WHCIH ARE THINNING TOO MUCH)

INEVITABLE I THINK A T MY AGE ~(69 GOING ON 21) & 4 + YR S SINCE DXD WIHT THE PSP

I CANT EXERCISE ANYTHING LIKE I USED TO AND IT MAKES IT MUCH MORE DIFFICULT OT DO ANYTHING WIHT MY PARTNER

BUT5 WE LIVE ON THE BEST WE CAN

I HAVE A FEW "RUMBLES IN THE JUNGLE" NWO SO HAD BETTER GO TO THE BAHTROOM!

in addition, i don't need to know why, but what can i do about it? if it's PD or not , just deal with the problem at hand. if that doesn't help and you do everything you can to change the situation, then maybe it's something else . go see your doctor.

Tremor isn't just in your hand...it is everywhere and uses a huge number of calories.

HOW DO U KNOW THIS ? IT IS INTERESTIGN THAT YOU SAY THIS BUT HOW IS IT THE CASE

It depends on the degree of tremor of course but the one in your hand, if you have one, is just the obvious one. Regardless, any movement, no matter how slight, uses fuel and fuel for the body is measured in calories. The more movement, the more calories are used. Remember, even spasms and contractions are movement.
