Stiffness and inability to move upon waking

Does any one have the problem of being unable to move when waking in the morning? My whole body is stiff and aches, even my hands. Is this Parkinsons or something else?

Hi Siak. Yes! I feel sure it is Pd causing the problem. Don't let it get you down. Laugh at it, and get on with getting your body to work again for another day. If you are newly diagnosed perhaps you would benefit by going to my website - reverseparkinsons.net in which you will find lots of information on Pd an many ways of fighting it.

That is just what I experience when I first get up -- which is usually between 3 and 4 in morning. It is PD alright. But after I move around a little I limber up and feel better. That first cup of tea in the morning (with coconut oil in it) helps too.

Hi Siak,

I have had this problem for around 3 years (dxd 10yrs) but as it came on gradually it wasn't a big deal until I realised when keeping diary sheets for a trial that from waking to breakfast can take between 30mins - 2.5 hours. To redress this I changed meds to 1 Madopar (chewable) on waking, 30 mins later 1x 8mg Requip & 1x Sinemet+. During the day at regular intervals 3x 1 Sinemet+ & at teatime 1 Madopar. Bedtime 1x1/2 Sinemet CR.

In the last 3 months my life has been vastly improved by taking the ApoGo Challenge to discover that I react positively to subcutaneous injections of Apokyn (apomorphine). One injection acts within minutes to stop freezing & shaking and lasts for around 1 hour which means I can start the day & get moving. Once moving the other symptoms usually ease as others have found.

Unfortunately as we all know each of us reacts differently to drugs & other treatments so this doesn't work for everyone. It must be worth asking your PD nurse or consultant whether or not they think you might benefit from taking the Challenge.

Hi Siak, I had this problem and found that it got better when I drastically reduced the amount of sugar I ate (for some reason refined sugar causes me to have a lot of pain and stiffness). I was still having a problem with my lower back seizing up at night though and have found that applying Magnesium Chloride spray to my lower back before bed helps this quite a bit. Of course everyone is different so I don't know if either of these 2 things would help you. Also, I'm very careful of what I eat and avoid gluten, dairy, soy, yeast and as I mentioned limit my sugar intake.

thank you all for your suggestions--it is very helpful to know what works for others. I wish all of you health and happiness.
