I recently purchased MCT oil, thinking it might be easier to take because it's more liquid in form. I noticed my tremors where worse, after having had good luck with coconut oil. So I looked up info on MCT vs Coconut oil, and found that the most important medium chain fatty acid, lauric acid, has been mechanically removed from the MCT oil, making the most important acid, lauric acid, negligible. The lauric acid is the most important thing in it! So I'll be switching back to virgin coconut oil, the more natural form of medium chain fatty acids. Guess I'll use the mct oil for cooking to get rid of the rest of it. Link to article here: healthimpactnews.com/2014/m...

MCT vs Coconut Oil
1.
I recently stopped my MCT Oil for fear it was interfering with my sleep. As I read from other's experience.
2.
I do not know were I found this comment:
"A report that MCT oil not recommended."

MCT Oil/Coconut oil Mixture
Store at room temperature, in a quart size jar:
16 ounces MCT oil + 12 ounces coconut oil
Wonder how virgin coconut oil in capsules would work? I know it is available.
Gel caps?
1000mg gel caps are not near enough to the dose necessary.
1000mg = 1 gram / 1 Tablespoon = 14.25g
“Therapeutic levels of MCTs have been studied at 20 grams per day. According to Dr. Newport's calculations, just over two tablespoons of coconut oil (about 35 ml or seven level teaspoons) would supply you with the equivalent of 20 grams of MCT, which is indicated as either a preventative measure against degenerative neurological diseases, or as a treatment for an already established case.”
i use a 50-50 mixture of C-8 MCT Oil (caprylic acid) & Coconut Oil. C-8 oil generates the most ketones, but lauric acid is also important, as you recognized, hence the recommendation of Mary Newport to use a 50-50 mixture.
As for sleeping problems I have found quite the opposite finding. I specifically take a 2 TBS dose of the 50-50 mixture at 8-9 pm and try to be in bed by 10 pm. I sleep soundly and my clock alarm wakes me up at 8 am and my serum ketones are 3-7 mM/liter. If I don't take the 8-9 pm dosage, I don't get as good a sleep and my serum ketones are 0.5 - 2 mM/liter. I guess everyone reacts differently. I should also clarify that I am on a ketogenic diet.
thanks--I found Ms Newport's article about mixing coconut oil with MCT oil, so will do that. I'm also on a keto diet, but don't measure my serum ketones. I just decided to avoid all processed and concentrated carbs from now on. So no bread, flour, sugar, rice, pasta, potatoes, or desserts (my REAL weakness). Still have chili maybe once every month or two. I try never to have more than 15 carbs within a 4-5 hr window. Usually much less.
I realize that depending on where you live in the world a portable serum glucose/ketone meter and strips can be cost prohibitive, but they give an excellent insight into the relationship between ketones levels and magnitude of tremor. I have an intolerable tremor without ketones, so measuring is very important to me.
I started on coconut oil again and my tremors have again improved a lot! Does the C.O. / MCT mixture stay liquid, or just soft. Haven't started mixing together yet.
I just take a tablespoon of each 4 times a day. I had a bit of a calorie surplus problem but with 1 hour walking and trying to be somewhat active around the house my weight is under control again.
Glad to hear you are getting good results with coconut oil on a ketogenic diet. With tremor I found I have to maintain ketones as high as possible. Just wish I had known about ketones 14 years ago before I needed meds.
