Evidently any form of dopamine, including mucuna beans, causes an increase in uric acid in persons who are susceptible to gout. Has anyone experienced this problem?

I thought a high purine diet (opposite to the gout one) was recommended for pwP.

I think you are right, but where does that leave those of us who have both Parkinson's and uric acid problems?

I have had 1 bout of gout, around 3 yrs ago. The pain is indescribable - you could have fried an egg on my foot from a long way away. I take Allopurinol daily & haven't had a problem since. Although my PD support team are aware of this no mention has been made of it being related to PD or meds.

Maybe your PD support team does not know that uric acid levels are raised by dopamine, or maybe they do know and they don't want you to know. Parkinson's disease is such a cash cow for Big Pharma that I am sure they don't want patients to be informed of the effects of all these costly medicines.

I had a number of gout attacks in the 60's

luckily the discovery of Zyloprin(trade name in Australia) has kept in control l have had PD

for over12yrs and never had an attack of gout so think your fears are probably groundless

Also have never heard of the connection between the two in 12yrs of being examined by all and sundry including being a patient used as testing facility for examination to become a member of the Royal College of Physicians where every thing that had happened since I was born was examined.

Overall i would rate it as a worry as a1 out of 10

cheers

Zyloprin is ths same thing as Allopurinol. So by adding another prescription medicine you have been able to cure the effects of another.

That is the reason I stopped taking Mucuna pruriens....my foot and big toe started burning . I thought it was an ingrown toenail....but no. I know it was gout....I stopped the mp and it has subsided.

From what I read, synthethic dopamine as prepared by Big Pharma also raises uric acid levels. I suppose one could take Allopurinol to fix the uric acid problem, but thre are a lot of side effects from Allopurinol. I would prefer to take nothing asnd that is what I am going to try to do an see what happens.

Hi there,

I tried 'doing nothing' in the sense of taking prescrition meds for 2 yrs after dx with the full support of my PD med team. When I was in constant pain & could only do stairs on my bottom I finally decided to try a combination of both. The rest, as they say, is history. I now function fairly normally & use any & all weapons in the armoury. I am involved in 1 PD medical trial (Birmingham Uni) & a clinical trial which may lead to a stem cell transplant. I don't find pharma conspiracy theories helpful - they are in business to make money & like any (human) organisations there are those who abuse knowledge/power.

The principal "conspiracy theory" about Big Pharma is one that you identified yourself. They are in business to make money. They never forget that this is their purpose, and neither do I.

In England, you do not have the same profit driven medical industry that we have in the United States. In this country many of those "conspiracy theories" are not theories.

Hello,

Have you tried Curcumin? If you are interested in this spice, please do some research before ordering. By all means discuss it with your GP/neurologist, but do not be surprised if they laugh at the suggestion. Make no mistake, Curcumin is a serious medicine.

Regards

Norton

Thanks. I have been taking curcumin for years. Curcumin and Co-Q-10 are my standby supplements.
