Hi all! I am new to this forum, but have been very active on HU for a couple of years now.

I was diagnosed with Chron's in 2021 and have had quite the journey. It has been a blessing AND a curse. I struggle with finding foods that will not inflame or irritate me, and I have to plan trips/journeys accordingly. I have been doing great recently, but last night I was in terrible pain... I am staying home from work today to rest, but wanted to ask the forum:

What foods do you consume when you are in a flare up/pain? I find that it differs for me from incident to incident, but there must be something that I can fall back on.

Thanks so much!

Hi, welcome to the forum. Diet is such an individual thing. Over time you will find a diet that suits you and isn't too restrictive, after all we do have to live with this disease. I think it's fair to say that if you are going through a flare up sticking to bland foods...rice, chicken, white bread, bananas and pureed apple will ease symptoms. As you feel better you can vary your diet. I'm afraid most of the time it's a matter of trial and error. Hope you feel better soon and good luck!

I have pancolitis not Crohns but my gastroenterologist said that there is not a specific food or food group that will benefit symptoms when flaring. The majority of people will agree that sticking to a 'white/beige' diet for a week or two is helpful; basically more bland foods like rice, pasta, chicken, fish etc.. but not cooked with spicy sauces or deep fried etc..for most of us, this does help but the only way a flare calms down normally is with meds (possibly steroids). You should be guided by your doctors on this one. Good luck.

Thanks so much for the info! I have just been trying to get a general idea of what people are eating to compare with what my doctors and dieticians are recommending. :)

The thing to watch out for is if anything you are eating is causing the flare up/pain in the first place. It is different for everybody. I have had Crohn's for over 40 years and the only thing has been salted peanuts by the handful, no problem the odd one, but not a packet of them. No problem with spicy food etc. When recovering it is always best just to stick to food you find easy to digest. If you have had to stop eating after a bad episode, just build up gradually, soup, then eggs etc. try not to overload your system. My system is poor at the moment so I am on a low fibre diet so try to keep what I eat to 2g fiber pre 100g or lower. You would be quite surprised how much fibre is actually in White Bread!
