I've ordered a (newly available) Garmin forerunner 10:
sites.garmin.com/forerunner10/
These are the simplest kind, they also have more complicated ones with more functions.
At the moment I use geodistance.com to work out distance.
If you have a fancy phone you can get apps for that - but I don't

Yeah if you have a smartphone you can get lots of free apps. I use mapmyrun (and mapmyride for when I'm cycling). It logs your route, elevation, ave pace/speed, max pace and speed and calories burnt. You can also log onto their website which tells you the split per km and other things. I think it's really good (ok it gives dodgy errors on the max pace very occasionally but it is free. It hasn't let me down yet)
There are many others such as Endomondo, but I can't advise on those but I think essentially they all do pretty much the same thing.

Mapmyrun is good. I've also got a Garmin 110 but only because my boss treated me as a reward for graduating ! I do like reading all the data telling me how slow I am

I have recently got a Nike+ Sportband. I'm really happy with it so far. I don't wear Nike trainers so I attach the sensor to my laces using one of the little pouches you can buy. It probably isn't as high tech as some of the other options but it does what I need it to do.
