Has watching the Tour de France made anyone think about taking up cycling (and then...triathlons!)?

I only learned to cycle last year (better late than never, since I'm 61!) but I love to swim so I often do my own personal triathlon with c25k, followed by 10k cycle and 1k swim. Not planning to do any organised triathlons though! :)

Triathlons include swimming and I'm really not very good at that, so I'll rule that out !

I've got a nice shiny new road-going bicycle and I want to start cycling to work on at least one of my "rest" days - it's eight miles each way so should be good exercise :-) I've also overhauled my old, tatty bicycle with the intention of cycling to my Yoga lesson on Wednesday and running club on Thursday - they're both at a nearby leisure centre so it's been feeling wasteful to drive but I wouldn't be happy locking my shiny new bike outside there because it might look too nickable.

There's a duathlon locally (running and cycling) that I like the sound of but it would mean splashing out on an off-road bike and I don't think I can really afford another "hobby" ! I took up running because it should be relatively inexpensive but I've got all obsessive and keep buying books and magazines.......

I think I'll stick to "just" running and use the bicycles for transport and for "cross-training" on rest days :-)

Yes I'm venturing into triathlons but not because of the Tour de France, although how great is Bradley Wiggins?

It just seems like a natural progression since I've been swimming and cycling since I was young and now I can actually run too! I'm taking part in a novice triathlon as a team (3 people doing one section each), I'm doing the swimming part since I'm strongest in it but will defiantly look into doing a full one by myself if I enjoy it. :)

What about you, are you thinking about it?

Wow! This sounds a great way to get into it. No, I'm not thinking about it for myself but I love watching the tour de france and think that they're all incredibly fit (understatement) The time trials yesterday were unbelievable, Wiggens was awesome.

I used to do loads of cycling a few years back, but just haven't got the time anymore.... By the time I've done 50 miles or so with a cake and cafe stop, a large chunk of the day is gone and the dog still needs walking. As for swimming, having been forced to do it competitively as a kid, it's sort of spoiled it for me - no triathlons for me I think!

I used to cycle loads when I was young ( :'( ) the roads are far too scary now....Not sure I have it in me to be that brave.

I am more inclined to relocate somewhere hilly and become a fell running groupie.

I agree, I have a friend who cycles every day and he has nearly lost his life twice this year because of crazy drivers on the roads.

If it wasnt for the swimming though I quite fancied it, but if you have seen my message (fell off bike) you will understand my reservations. lol

NOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously though, it is amazing what Mr Wiggins and the team are doing, it is a very inspirational and sporty year this year. I am sure by the end of the olympics we will be thinking about joining a fencing/shooting/archery/gymnastics club. Been watching a bit of the golf this weekend, anyone for a round?????????????

Fencing is quite fun I have done that from time to time. Suffered from not being nearly fit enough though. Might have another go now I am stronger in that respect.

I'm with deadasadodo - NOOOOOOO WAAAAAYYYYYY!!!

It's hard enough lugging myself along doing this, never mind chucking in swimming and cycling! Although I do like both :)

I don't think I'm the competitive type really either (only with myself) to be able to compete. I'd be the one saying 'No, after you!' :D

I got interested in running about two years ago, for the first time in my life - took me this long to actually get started though! Not sure if it was before or after that when I also came up with the crazy notion of doing a triathlon. I like cycling (although my knees don't) and I like swimming (although I haven't been since gaining so much weight) so I thought if I could just learn to do the impossible - run - then I could give it a go. I'm not competitive, and that puts me off a little. I want a parkrun version of triathlon, that I can do just for fun/fitness. I don't know if such a thing exists, but I didn't know about parkruns either before I found c25k.

Legion, if your knees are playing up when cycling, chances are your seatpost is too low (no, your feet don't need to touch the ground when sitting on the saddle) or you are grinding your gears instead of spinning. Have a look at your setup and try using a lower gear to get your cadence up! (Sorry if you have already checked those things, but the amount of recreational cyclists that have the seat way too low is probably about 90%) When sitting in the saddle with your HEEL on the pedal and the pedal in the 5 o'clock position, your leg and knee should be completely straight, which will give you the slight bend you need when the ball of your foot is on the pedal for actual cycling. And it makes it so much easier and faster!!!

Thanks tb. My father was a keen cyclist and does his best to teach me all he knows. ;) I think if I could cycle on the flat I would be fine. It's the hills which my knees don't like. Usually I'm ok when I'm out but once I get home, my knees tell me about it. :( I will start cycling again once I've completed c25k, but I don't want to jeopardise completing the program.

:) sooooo tempted apart from not being a very strong swimmer, think I lack the technique, therefore confidence more than anything, does Laura do a waterproof version for water based activity I wonder?

mrqwest profile image

I'm seriously tempted by a bike (my last one got stolen :( )! A few of my friends go out cycling at weekends covering 30-50+ miles each time and I'd love to join them on such journeys. yes, it's scary but surely it'd be more fun that scary depending on where you cycled?

I'm like a brick in the pool though so as much as I'd love to attempt a triathlon, I don't think it's for me.

Started cycling first as a way of getting fit before starting C25K and ride on rest days - only cycle on cycle paths/trails tho and thought I might try a Sky Ride (organised traffic free rides though cities, etc. soon.) May have to work on swimming.......pants doing this, so wont be rushing to do a triathalon.

If anyone is intereted in riding to work there is a scheme which you can claim tax back on a new bike cyclescheme.co.uk - great if you could work out a safe route.

No, but I do duathlons! I normally just enter the "participant only" ones, but I have entered the South Island Masters games in October (I live in NZ). This is a proper race, that's why I started C25K. I love cycling and have just graduated to a road bike from a MTB with road tyres. If you find a duathlon give it try!

I am so thinking about triathlons - a super sprint as a long term goal, but I am not keen on swimming in open water (the sea maybe but not the local gravel pits where the tri club train). I asked about Weil's disease and was not happy with the answer that a bottle of pop after the swim prevents infection...sounds a bit too old wifey to be scientific. I have started cross-training on my bike, and as soon as I fit back into my swimming cossie ;) will start swimming too (can't buy anything else!!!). Let's see where this takes us :) There's a yearly one at a local health club done in their indoor pool which sounds much nicer.

In the mean time I may enter a 30mile charity bike ride in Sept and try to knock down my 5k - I don't really want to but inevitably will end up entering myself in the local 10k next yr. :( x x x
