Getting back there - W1R3

Today was run 3. Starting again and wanting to do things right, a bit scared my knee will start hurting and I’ll have to stop running.

Without a doubt my big accomplishment today has been getting out there even if I felt a little anxious before hand. My head tells me people will look at me and judge me, that they will think why is she stopping? Is she that unfit? I know they probably don’t even notice me but that’s what my head does… I am getting out there anyway.

When running today I thought about this group and that it’s great to be able to share my journey with people who understand what it takes to start from scratch.

Happy running everyone! 🏃🏽‍♀️

I'm about to start on my first run tomorrow......arghhh.rye worry...... My knee was always an issue in my younger years...lots of Drs...lots 9f surgery....I am now an unfit 48 yr old. I know I will have to stop...far more than I want to...because of my knee.....but your run and self determination is what matters. Who cares.....you are doing it and it's fabulous! Go for it and remember your knee is real!!

Aw really!? Seems like you have real experience about it. I sometimes think if it might be psychological I went to the physio before and they discharged me because they didn’t think there was anything wrong so… it’s hard when sometimes I hear stop if it hurts but… it doesn’t hurt so much I need to stop so it a bit confusing I guess

Real good luck tomorrow I’m sure you’ll be fine :)

Thanks....from my experience it's the worry that it's going to go...you feel the tension but never know if it's actually going to go on you so you stop...I had physio for 2 years and never improved....I went from 20 miles running to 1.5 miles....quite horrible..but....your body is what it is...it can what it can..and we can improve it...little by little. So.etimes it's worth seeing if we can push further. That's what I am trying to say to myself!! Haha.

Good job on starting again and getting back out there. Definitely a lot of mental battles going on but with each run you'll be stronger and it becomes easier to win those fights. I was a little paranoid with running from the house so went out later in the evening since I'm not an early bird but now just go when it best suits me. Think of it another way, if anyone is really paying much attention then they might be generally interested and imagine down the line when that same person might see the much fitter you running 30+ minutes nice and steady 🙂 Regardless, it's your runs, for you - enjoy them and celebrate your successes

Looks like you’ve got a good spot for it.

Try not to worry about what people are thinking. They’re either probably pondering what to have for dinner or thinking that you’re doing a great job getting out there and working on getting fitter.

We all have to start somewhere so just take it slow and steady and trust the programme. It works and you’ll get there. Enjoy the runs

So first of all, people who can run 5 or 10k, or longer, often walk for shirt sections... If you've ever heard the term "jeffing" well that's what it is. It's good training, it can even get you better times than running the whole way. So anyone passing has no idea if you are doing run 1 week 1 or training for a half marathon!Best advice I can give for your knee is, don't take huge strides, and try to land on mid foot and not heel. This is to reduce the impact on your joints.

As for the physio, I used to have random knee pain years ago with no apparent cause, but I've discovered lately that I have been favouring one hip and that's caused problems in my knee and ankle joints.

So, on a non running day, you could have a nosy at the strength and flex site for knee strengthening, ankle strengthening and hip strengthening exercises for runners. You might have one hip stronger than the other, or another seemingly unconnected issue... If nothing else, strengthening your core muscles through Pilates or yoga will support the rest of your body when you run.

Erm, that looks like loads 😬 - just pick one thing that sounds useful to start with!

Hi and well done on your W1. I had to stop around this time last year due my knees hurting. I went to the physio who gave me a full exam. She said that there was nothing wrong with my knees. She said that C25K is brilliant but she felt it did have some big jumps in the first 4 weeks. She advised me to repeat each week. She also gave me some knee exercises. Just stepping up and down 10x on a step facing forwards. Then stepping up and down facing sideways. I did repeat each week until W5 and faithfully followed my exercises and I had no trouble. As an aside I still haven't graduated but this is due chest infections and not knees. This time I

Aw thanks so much for sharing these. I should do knee exercises too. I should have the ones the physio gave me years ago.

Well done for getting back into it!

I’ve never managed to graduate due to joint problems - I made it to W8R3 last time but my hips and knees were so painful I took a break and never got back in to it, but yesterday the sun was shining, I had a day off so I went right back to W1R1 and got out there. I’m going to have to take a break because I’m having surgery soon, but my basic plan is to get to the point where I’m running for 20 mins and stick to that for a while.

I know from my last couple of attempts I can do the course and get to 20 mins and it’s not too hard on my joints, so I’m thinking if I can do that for a few weeks it will improve my stamina without too much trauma. There is no shame in repeating weeks, and with my hips I would rather get out there and not hurt myself than not get out at all, and I’m sure the time will come where I feel confident enough to up my run length and by then my muscles and tendons will be strong enough to carry me through.

Don’t give up, you are doing brilliantly, and if it’s any consolation if I see someone running I mentally give them a high five because they have chosen not to sit on the sofa and do nothing. Keep going, you’re amazing!
