Shin splints or just calf pain?

Is the pain of shin splints actually felt on the shins, or does it involve the calves as well? Is the pain down the front of the shins, or on the inside of the leg, where ligaments and muscles are attached to the bone, as a according to the NHS website, the pain comes from these soft tissues becoming inflamed. They recommend not resuming the activity that has caused the problem until the pain has subsided. Has any else dealt with this problem? All advice welcome, thank you.
