Hey, I'm new to this forum after only just discovering it via the c 2 5k app!

I'm currently completely week 5! yay!

Only problem I seem to be having is shin splints. Apparently being over weight isn't a factor. I've changed trainers etc. I really want to keep running but worry heavy legs and shin splints might throw me off course. Any advice is appreciated

Ah yes. I was dogged by them the whole programme.

Firstly you might need to rest to let them recover. For me I ended up taking week or twice to let them heal up.

Your situation may be totally different but the only way I keep it at bay was slowing down the programme. From where you’re at I increased a minute or two per week until I hit 30 mins.

Happy to report no issues now post graduation though I’ve remainder very careful and while graduated at 5k (not in 30 mins) I’m at 5.5k and I’m letting my body adjust and strengthen before I consider upping further.

This is completely normal and I experienced this after week 2 and decided to rest, walk for a couple of weeks and then start again.

Some strength training and regular stretching will really help. There are some good YouTube videos with Dr Jo.

I also got myself some calf sleeves when I started again which helped massively and I've not run without them since I got them about 10 months ago!

Happy to share links with you etc if you want to message me.

Good luck!!

Welcome to the forum and well done on your progress.

It is a very common issue amongst new runners. Reduce impact, stretch, strengthen and hydrate.

This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

and includes advice on minimising impact, stretching after every run, hydration and strengthening exercises, all of which will help.

Enjoy your journey.
