Hi all just wondering if pain beneath the right knee is common ? I’ve just started week 4 as a novice runner, I have been taking it steady and stretching properly after each run , is it best to rest or try and run it off ? really frustrating the running was really making a difference with my mental illness ☹️

Well done on your progress.

Knee pain is incredibly common for new runners and the best advice I can give is follow the advice in the guide to the plan on minimising impact.

Do not run in pain. Try extra rest days and the strengthening exercises, linked to in the guide to build the supportive musculature.

Don't let it get you down. Dealing with physical issues is part and parcel of becoming a runner and will boost your self confidence, as you become more attuned to and knowledgeable about your body.

If you strengthen your legs, then in a few weeks most knee pain will probably disappear.

Hang in there brother. I feel your pain! Took some extra rest days and slowly built it back up!

Very common. If it’s the usual, it’ll go in a week or so. I took ibuprofen.

Hi there. I had the same pain starting out. I took ibuprofen, iced knee and rested. I then repeated earlier weeks and slowed right down. I bought knee supports and that also made a huge difference. It eventually passes. One last thing, I switched from road running to forest running where the trails underfoot are much softer thus lessening the impact on my knees. I’m now on run 2 of week 7 and running for 25mins. It does pass. Good luck!

I’ve had problems with knee pain for weeks and weeks. Reduced my runs to 2 a week, using knee supports, doing all the NHS post-run stretches and some physio knee strengthening exercises off the internet. Was worried I couldn’t continue with the program, then W8 it’s just suddenly stopped! Hopefully it’ll be the same for you.
