So... that’s one mystery solved...

So, as I posted, I did my first 5k yesterday in a leisurely 49 minutes. Mysteriously, my heart rate appeared to go *down* during the exercise, according to a measuring device that correlated with other similar devices.

I have discovered why today! I moved on from using the 5k stepping stone podcast, in couch to 5k +, to the podcast that focuses on speed. I really gave it my best during the first speed bit, and, finally, my heart rate shot up to 130 and above. Then... I couldn’t recover in the allotted time and ended up walking the rest of the ‘run’.

I think running 5k very slowly was not enough to affect my heart rate. And now I feel like a fraud - because I don’t think I have been doing any actual cardio exercise all this time, during the whole couch to 5k. And as soon as I actually try, I give up.

I do love what I’ve got from running though, and really want to keep it up. Please lend me any support you have going spare!

If you run at the top end of the range in which you can speak clear ungasping sentences as you run, then you will be at approximately 75% of maximum heart rate, which is the perfect zone to build the solid aerobic base required to run faster and further, which is why it is the pace at which elite athletes spend up to 80% of their training time.

Hi, just read your post and can relate to how you feel about not running aerobically. I'm on W6R2 today and my heart rate has never "appeared" to go into the aerobic range since I've been using a measuring device. Well.....apart from my very first run when I ran far too quickly for my lack of fitness!!! But.....I'm still running and completing the runs without being exhausted. Apart from anything else not sure I can run any faster at the moment...I'm 65 and haven't run since I was 40.... I feel happier that I'm still out there and exercising. You're not a fraud....you've continually progressed, that's the most important thing I believe. Remember when we first started the programme....how great we felt after every week's achievement. You've upped your game.....take it easy on yourself. 👍👍👍
