Knee pain ...suspended programme W6R2. Long post alert

I have had knee pain starting around W4. I had to leave 2-3 days between runs and got to week 6 run 2 on Tuesday but avoided running since for fear of doing some permanent damage

Amazingly it is OK to run on just the evening and a couple of days after the run I can't walk down or upstairs without pain and when I sit/lay too long it is really painful.

Gait analysis found my trainers were not as supportive as I needed...huge over pronation issue....now have lovely new ones ....only managed 1 run.

I have done all the usual RICE and been more committed to the strength and flex stuff

I have decided not to push through to see if pain totally subsides why i keep strength/stretching. I am also fast walking to try keep a bit of cardio fitness

Waiting for physio to diagnose what the problem is....I know historically i have been told I have a bit of instability due to hip/knee angle that will be helped by strengthening the muscles around the knee

Does anyone have any suggestion....I think I am looking for someone to tell me it's ok to run....I am a bit addicted

Sorry to read about your knee problems bubblebird123 - they can be so frustrating and as you will know, there are so many causes. I think seeing a sports physio is the best idea as they will be able to examine you properly (or at least give you a phone consultation?) flag up any gait issues or muscle weakness or imbalances and hopefully give you some exercises to help sort things out.

If you are really suffering after a run, as you say you are - I would take a short break until you have had more professional advice. Knees can be tricky, it's not worth risking further injury. Having said that, you may find that once you have a proper diagnosis, this can be fixed relatively easily with strength and flexibility work.

Stay positive - so many of us have had injuries that have kept us out for a while ( me included, on several occasions!) but the road is long - you will get back to it soon. Take care.🙂

Thanks for that. I managed to get a physio assessment. It looks like patellar femoral issue. Wonky knees, weak muscles and tight hips and hamstrings....😃 with a bit of arthritis thrown in....oh the joys but it could be worse.

I am going to get a bit more focused on the exercises she has hiven me with a bit of a running break

I remain positive it looks like lots have been there and come out the other end

Well done on seeing someone. Definately stay positive - as you say, lots of us have been there and are now back running comfortably again! Good luck with those exercises too!🤞😀

My injury appeared once I had graduated and done a few consolidation runs.

What I had to do was wait several weeks for the injury to heal. No point making matters worse.

I did see a sports physio, got the correct trainers ( seems I overpronate on just my left leg )

Then after a couple of uncomfortable attempts at later weeks, I redid the whole programme, so my knee could adapt to the corrected position.

The physio was reassuring and said if I had not had knee problems prior to running, it could be fixed.

18 months later.....

I got Hoka Arahi, ugly but I love them.

You will get there, but be patient, and don't run until you are pain free.

I really attempted to finish the plan. Amazingly I can run without a problem it is only the after effects causing a problem. After listening to you guys....and realising I seem to have a passion for running i decided to get a long term fix as opposed to focusing on the short term goal

I do have the ugly shoe thing too....but hey we are special...anyone can have the sassy regular stuff 😃😁
