My first hour long run (+ what do I need to do now?)

I graduated C25K last month and today I did a very slow non-stop run for 60 minutes!

Because I still crave structure, I've been using the Nike Run Club 'My Coach' plan, which takes your existing average pace and distance covered and converts that into an 8 week 'personalised' plan with a suggested pace for your runs.

In my plan there is a long run at the weekend that has been increasing by half a km each weekend. Today's run was 7km and because of the current pace I am aiming for (just over 8 mins per km) I decided to put on an hour-long audio guided run. And I kept it slow and didn't stop!

The reason I am posting this is if there are people starting out, or are approaching week 5 when the longer non-stop runs start: you can do this! I started Couch to 5K 22nd March having not exercised properly in about 3 years. My tip would be, keep it slow and comfortable and then only up the pace when you're ready.

Also, I realise that now that I am running for an hour plus, that I may need to take more precautions before hitting the road. I am currently not bringing water with me but making sure I am well hydrated the day before and having a large drink and small snack about an hour before I set off. Should I be bringing water with me now that I am running for a longer time? Any other tips or things to consider, would really appreciate any advice from more seasoned runners!

You are doing really well. 👏🏼🎉 Congratulations on achieving that one hour run!

I don’t carry water for an hour’s running unless the weather is very hot. But we are all different. Do what suits you. If I get to the area by car. I do always have water in the car. Thirst seems to hit me at the end. 😊

Over on Bridge to 10k there are lots of suggestions of ways to carry on - including just hang in there and don’t extend. It all depends on what you fancy, as long as you don’t push too hard. Too much, too soon, has led sundry folks to injury. 😧

Enjoy your running. That’s the main thing. And well done so far! 🎉

Well done.

Once you get to an hours continuous running you are entering the territory where you could benefit from considering carrying water, but you still don't really need to do anything about nutrition if your diet is good.

I tend not to carry water for anything less than a 12k run, but that is my personal preference.

You would probably benefit from looking on the Bridge to 10k forum now, although it is wonderful to have your inspirational posts on this forum.
