OFF THE COUCH: Running is better for your knees than walking ...

... FACT.

In the BBC's The Truth About ... series, Dr Michael Mosley went to see a university professor who has shown that over a given distance, walking exerts more force on your knees than running does. It's due to an increased contact time with the ground.

PS the whole episode is worth watching. '10,000' steps has no evidence behind it - it was a marketing gimmick for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

That's really good to know. I expected to have problems with my knees but so far so good (week 7).

I had problems with my knees before I started running 2 years ago. Those problems have now disappeared. Knee strengthening exercises will also help your running, available on the nhs website.
