Running faster than I walk

Tomorrow I start the end of my journey, I venture onto week 9

I am very slow with my plodding and in the beginning that was a concern for me, however, I've learnt slow is absolutely ok, slow builds strength and slow has meant that I've stuck with this program and not quit

But I was still intrigued to see if my jogging pace was quicker than my walking pace. So I went out and walked the route I always do on ' my field '

What took me 28 minutes to run for week 8 took me 31 minutes to walk. That obviously means my run is quick than my walk, not by much, but still its quicker

I'm so thrilled, its given me a bit of confidence to start week 9

Haha , brilliant 😁

Not so sure you are starting the end of the journey though, more like the end of the beginning 😁

All the best with week 9, enjoy them 😁👍

Begining /end I'm not sure which way round it is 🤣

And thank you, I'm looking forward to it 😊

Ooh I like this, VPOLLIE67 needs to see it. Graduation is just the beginning! 🙌🏼

I love going slowly - feels lovely. (Which is lucky as I have no option.). Thinking of buying a graduation badge at the end of this. Looking forward. Enjoy your last week, S

That's a good run and walk for you Feltip, you are quicker running than walking, good luck for week 9 and especially run 3, your graduation run.

I like to compare my 5K course by walking, running and cycling just for comparing the different times, a average 5K walk takes me 55 minutes, average run, 33/34 minutes and I have cycled it on my mountain bike in 19 minutes, if I had a racing bike that would be around 13 minutes.

Thank you for the good wishes, I'm looking forward to the week ahead

That's great that you've been able to compare your different ways of completing your course, interesting to know how they differ. I go to the same field and run laps, I've now noticed that bit further round I get as the times have increased. I never thought I would have this enthusiasm for it 🤣

Your speed will increase over time, you’re on week 9 but your still a relatively new runner, so be patient and you’ll be surprised, I was, but it took weeks of consolidation runs before pace and speed began to increase....Best of luck with week 9 Feltip 👍

Feltip profile image
FeltipGraduate in reply to Couchphoenix

Thank you. I'm really not worried about my speed. I'm enjoying what I'm doing right now. Realising what I can do has been quite an experience for me. That's not to say after graduation I wont become hungry for more, but right now I'm really happy 😊💪🏃‍♀️

You’ve inspired me to try again and to literally run as slow as possible. Sod my self-conscious ways 👍👍

Feltip profile image
FeltipGraduate in reply to Maxi80

Oh wow, that's amazing.

I read on here somewhere recently that some people's jog was slower than their walking pace. I was intrigued to see if I was like that.

In the beginning I was concerned at my lack of speed but that really doesn't bother me now.

I really hope you find your comfortable pace and you continue, good luck 🤞😊

Maxi80 profile image
Maxi80 in reply to Feltip

How slow is it until it becomes walking?

Feltip profile image
FeltipGraduate in reply to Maxi80

No idea!!!

I read on here somewhere so long as both feet leave the ground it's a run. I was never able to tell if mine did, part of the reason I walked my route yesterday.

When I walk I often get a sore back, due to the weight I carry I assume, it hurt yesterday almost as soon as I started my walk, but throughout my run today didnt hurt once, I guess it's down to posture.

Also small steps, my stride isnt very big.

Experiment I guess, walk a bit timing yourself, then do it again with a slight jog.

I hate it when people say 'if I can do it you can do it' because people have no idea about someone else's situation. But trust when I say I'm overweight I really am, I got out of breath getting dressed, my back hurts when I walk, unfit doesn't come close to describe me. If you had said 3 months ago I would be on the verge of graduating I wouldn't have believed you. I've now proved to myself I run faster than I walk and I can run for 30 minutes without stopping. So if I'm slow, I'm slow, who cares, not me. The change inside my head is amazing. I will still suffer with my confidence and slight depression but I now know if I think positively things are for me achievable and that is enough for me.

Sorry to ramble, I just wish I could pass onto you some belief and confidence 😘🤗

I really enjoyed reading that. I can relate on many levels. And yeah that’s a pet peeve of mine too ‘If I can do it......’ ......I’m like dude, I’m not faking having lead weights for calves. 😂

You need to enjoy life, if running helps then great, if walking helps then great. This particular week might be a wall for you, once you've over come it it might make you mentally stronger to tackle future weeks. Week 7 was my 'moment' the one for many reasons I was dreading, nervous about, worried about. What if I fail, what if it beats me. I tell my kids it's better try than not try, so I thought I best practice what I preach. I did it and cried, then cried some more. But what I learned was a lot of it is mental strength. I understand not everything can be conquered, I'm not running a marathon on positive thinking but a slow 25 minute plod was in my grasp and not completing that run doesn't make me a failure. I understand that starting with a positive mindset at least helps you to start successfully.

If you have to add an extra 30 second walk into the middle of it, would that matter, eventually you'll do it without that extra walk. Allowing yourself that extra walk might help you psychologically and it might be all you need

😊🤗

Oh yes, that's great, slow is still faster than not doing it. I'm in no race I'm just glad to be doing it. Its improved my mental and physical strength, so that's worth it for me, good luck

I thought exactly the same so I did this too ! I'm still very slow but my jog pace is a minute and a half quicker than my walk pace ! And , like you it meant I kept going. Since I graduated, I still 'joggle''around my area 3 times a week. I'm starting to accept slow is ok .Go you !

Feltip profile image
FeltipGraduate in reply to jwillmac

Slow is defo ok. Slow means I still do it rather than try to speed up, get defeated and give up.

If I jog faster than I walk thats ok with me

I've noticed an improvement in my mental strength to which is so important to me.

I love a 'joggle' too 🤣

Well done you. I refer to my ' running ' as shuffling, as I don't feel I go much faster then my husband can walk with his long legs, but as everyone says on here, slow is good. Just as well, as I'm very slow but I enjoy my shuffles just as they are 😄

Feltip profile image
FeltipGraduate in reply to Oldwoman65

If you enjoy it and it's good for you do you need any more

I should graduate next week, if I manage to continue to run 2 or 3 times a week and never get faster then so be it.

Well done us 😊👏

Oldwoman65 profile image
Oldwoman65Graduate in reply to Feltip

Definitely proud of myself. I'm not bothered about going further, just maybe a little bit faster but I'll build up to that one very slowly. Well done you. Keep going. It's such a great buzz

My first consolidation run today and I'm looking forward to seeing slugs roll past me as I totter around. You've got a brilliant attitude.

Feltip profile image
FeltipGraduate in reply to Sooperpook

That made me smile 😊

My mindset towards this program has changed enormously. I originally started this back in May, couldn't get past week 1, or so I thought, gave up crying. Re joined a few weeks later along with finding this forum and I've not missed a run yet, havent stopped once, havent repeated a week or run. The support is overwhelming, people on here have helped change my mindset, I'm so grateful I found it and that I've got this far 🥰

The slower the better for me! That’s why this program is so successful. I don’t put any pressure on myself and just enjoy that fabulous post run high! Nothing like it! Good luck

What a great idea! I'm going to try that. I have w9r3 tomorrow and as I've mapped my last few jogs on Google maps to try and establish distance (not very far) it would be reassuring to find out that my jog is quicker than my walk (I hope) 😬 I did overtake a person strolling the other day, but they were going pretty slow. Like you my pace lets me keep going so I'm not complaining, but it's nice if you can see a little improvement isn't it. Good luck with your last few runs of the 'beginning' though I don't think you will need it.

Feltip profile image

I was intrigued more than anything and although my speed doesn't bother me it was a nice confidence boost to realise that I do jog faster than I walk.

I do laps of a field opposite my house, today I did my first 30 mins and it was nice to see that I got a bit further round 😊

Well done on over taking someone 👍I've not had that pleasure yet 🤣
