After my first post on 1st April I have to say my attempts to get back to running have stalled. Despite going very slow the old problem of locked calve muscle has returned. I warm up, use correct shoes and also go cycling and walking for basic fitness.

This is not the first time I have tried but it is disappointing. Of course, my age doesn't help but don't know where to go from here..

Have you tried a foam roller on your calves after your run? They are great for getting rid of lactic acid and will help to get rid of muscle knots. Hurts like hell, but you will get great results!

Have you tried compression socks?

An acquaintance of mine, aged 71 and a lifelong runner, had a similar issue which did not respond to physio for over a year.

He now wears compression socks for every run and for a few hours after and is back out doing times that would be good for someone half his age.

Worth a try, maybe.

How is your hydration? A minimum of 2.5-3 litres per day, running or not, is crucial for anyone exerting themselves.

Thanks Iannoda,

I really do appreciate the advice. I will buy the socks and give it a go. Also must step up my water intake.

Cheers

Good for you keep trying all the variations to get started and maybe see a sports physio at some point when we can see people and touch people again. I do yoga and I’ve heard my yoga teacher say things about tight calves and hamstrings but I’m no expert .... you could look some yoga stuff up if you can? Good luck with it. Keep us posted.

Thank you Judy for your kind encouragment.

The problem arose about 15 years ago and I had an unsuccessful course of Physio/acupuncture. Tried again with another Physio 5 years ago who got me wearing heel inserts but no luck.

I'm now doing a brief work out each day and will try the compression socks.

I ran London in 1981 with a time of 3h26m but now 5K seems a long way off.
