Active week

So this week I’ve been active everyday I’ve found that biking is helping improve my fitness in a much better way than running. As running is causing a lot of problems for my back. And I feel recovery time is much longer when I’m running. I’ve been doing HIIT workouts after cycling which has boosted my calories burnt. Any one else find running too physically demanding on their bodies?

If you find an alternative that suits you better then go for it. Running has been great for me, but totally understand its not for everyone. You don't *have* to do this :)

I ditched cycling in favour of running. Running helps my mental health more plus is better for weight management for me.

Cycling was too hard on the backside too for hours at a time.

Both with help your cardiovascular fitness but they both use very different muscle groups too.

In an ideal world, do both 👍🏻

I’m only biking for around 5km so not very long but I’m trying to push myself by increasing the intensity hopefully if find the biking easier in a couple of weeks my body may get used to running more 🤞

Cycling has the huge advantage of being low impact, while still working both muscles and cardio aspects. That impact however is proven to be the best way to reduce loss of bone strength and running is the most efficient way to expend calories.

I have never had the buzz from cycling that I get from running.

As a cyclist since I was 7 and a runner since I was 71 I do find cycling 5K easy and running 5K the equivalent of cycling 25K in mainly flat conditions, the difference is when cycling up a hill you get a bit tired then you can free wheel down the other side, whereas in running up a hill you are also get tired but have to keep running down the other side, luckily the 5K I run is mainly on a flat route.

My primary fitness activity is cycling and I can ride for hours. I get to go much further than on 2 feet and I started cycling to support my back and it’s worked well. If you’re cycling make sure your bike is set up to support your back. I find running for 25mins far more exhausting than cycling for 2 hours (inc. uphill) but I’m getting satisfaction from C25K as I’ve never managed running. To support my back I make sure my arms don’t go past my middle as I found it was twisting my hips (check out sites on how to run) and I go slowly.

Good luck.

Thank you for that maybe it’s the way I run that’s hurting my back I broke my back 10 years ago so have to be careful with it.
