Icy throat/throat burn

I remember doing cross country at school and always getting what I would call "frozen throat". Well, the other evening , I ran and experienced the frozen throat and had to stop running because the burn was so painful. All memories of cross country at school came racing back.

4 days on , I've still got the sensation in my throat , obviously not as bad, , so I've not ran since.

I've read that running in cold temperatures can do this but will it improve ? Or am I destined to be running indoors on a treadmill for the winter? It's really frustrating.

Many run with a buff across their face when temperatures drop.
