Varied. I think that sums it up best. The wet sand is incredibly hard on the feet and the soft sand will leave your calf muscles screaming, but... it is amazing. The sea pounding or lapping, the cry of the gulls and the smells of the ocean carried on the breeze always invigorate me.

Best thing to do is to run between the hard water-lapped fringe and the much softer sand at the top. Should you want a really good work-out, find some dunes [making sure that you don't damage any delicate ecosystems] and run up and down those a few times as well as the run.

Good luck, and which beach do you have in mind?

PS. The salt will play havoc with your shoes. Make sure you give them a jolly good rinse in fresh water ASAP.

I have had wonderful runs on beaches, but as Sallycycle says, it depends on the sand.

Be careful, as injury has been known to be caused by running on sand.

Formby beach isn't too far from me. I've a tender foot/ankle that I am trying to protect. Will give it a go
