A long time ago I graduated and did a couple of Parkruns but then got a sore Achilles. A few attempts to "run it off" after a break made things worse and I ended up not running for months while I had physio and waited for it to get better. Then I got a dog and decided to go running with her, tried to keep up with her (an energetic Staffie) and strained my Achilles again. This summer walking her at least 5k every day had paid off and my leg felt ready to run again but this time I decided to go back to W1R1 and take things really slowly. I'm now at W3R2 and everything's fine so far. She runs with me but after 12 month's training (she was a stray) I can now let her off the lead and I run at my pace while she zooms all over the racecourse finding things to sniff and in a fruitless pursuit of any birds. It's easier this time, I have more basic fitness and I know a) what's coming and b) that I can do it so I'm confident I'll get to 5k again, though if there's the slightest niggle from my Achilles I've learned the hard way to stop immediately.
I'm glad to see Oldfloss is still handing out words of wisdom

Welcome back and your experience will definitely help. I'm back after 10 years when I did a 10k and nothing since. I'm just done w3r2 and really enjoying it. Tempted to go further and faster but I know that won't help in the long term! Enjoy the journey
