Lower back sore and stiff

Morning all,

I’m on W7R3 and have woken up this morning with an aching and sore lower back. It’s been coming on for a while and wondering if it’s related to running?

Any thoughts? Suggestions? Stretches I could do?

Anyone else had similar?

I had lower back aches when I first ran ten miles and got rid of it by doing plenty of core strength exercises. Very often one set of muscles can develop out of proportion to the supporting musculature, so that needs to be rectified.

If you do a search for core strength exercises for runners you will find plenty. Planks and crunches will be the heart of this and make you a much stronger runner.

That’s really helpful- thanks. Yes, I was wondering if I needed to address core strength weakness.

I've been plagued by lower back pain on and off so I started Pilates exercises which are great for core and back. There are lots of classes and dvds etc but there's also loads of free tutorials on YouTube. On rest days I religiously do a 10 minute video at home and it's made a massive difference so I class it as an essential companion to helping me run.

Good luck and I hope your back improves very soon.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. It’s really reassuring to hear that it’s helped your back. Have heard lots of good stuff about Pilates. Thanks again.👍
