Abandoning for now

Well I am on WK2 run 3 and have decided to abandon for now. I am enjoying my running but I have developed pains down both sides of my hips and across my back, it has kept me awake for the last 3 nights as I cannot get comfortable lying down. I have had problems like this before when I played hockey but it all went away when I stopped playing. I thought after 3 years I could ease back into running but it looks like this problem will just flare up each time I run. I am going to stop until it all calms down and then re-think what I can do to stop this happening. Is it my shoes? or should I be doing specific stretches? Everything is fine when I run - it's the aftermath!!

That's a shame, I would go to a sports physio and get yourself checked out, they may recommend some stretching and exercises to perform to strengthen you, to build up to running.

Yes I think I need to do some exercises etc before I start running again and then hopefully my body will support me more!!

I second about a sports physio. Some Gp refers to a physio. It could possibly be you need to have a slight adjustment but it takes a physio to access and then treat. I once thought I could never run because of my arthritis but the physio helped me to strengthen the muscles I needed and as I long as I keep my muscles toned the pain dosent come back.

If it is your lower back and hips, it could sciatic pain. Does it go into the legs?

I suffer with Sciatica, thankfully it is not constant and I can go months (years) with out a problem. But every now and again it will flair up and I have pain in my lower back and into my hips. It will certainly stop me doing exercise (can barely walk sometimes).

What ever it is, see your doctor and get it properly diagnosed before going for any treatment.

I think it's old scar tissue from years of playing hockey and my left side is worse I have been for injections and MRI but no good. Possibly Piriformis but could be anything. I stopped hockey and took up cycling but gave that up as it all came back again. It only goes away if I stop doing anything which is not what I want.

You poor thing! I'm going to say what everyone else has said - get yourself to a doctor and get it checked out, even if you've been before. Who knows, medicine might have moved on since last time you went! They may also be able to refer you to a physio (the NHS physios are very good, in my experience) to see if there are any exercises that can help.

I've found yoga excellent for gentle stretching and strengthening, and that might help you too, but I would recommend you find a small class with a teacher who has time to work with you and show you how to adjust positions to take account of your injuries, otherwise you run the risk of doing yourself more damage. There are some positions I just can't do due to the scar tissue in my weak ankle, for example, and a good teacher will give you alternatives that you can use instead.

Thankyou! Just got my yoga for cyclists back out to look at the exercises 😁
