Shin splints...

I've had a niggle in my shin for over a week now, but wonder if I should still be running. Probably should have asked before I did the last 2 runs of week 2... :)

It doesn't hurt while running, more at night and, strangely, sitting at my desk at work.

So only hurting while resting. And you run outdoor right?

No, gym so far but that will change from Wednesday as I'm off to sunnier climes.

Ah yeah I remember. I can't say I've had any shin problems especially on the treadmill and I've started doing the fat burn programs ( lots of inclines) I did have problems with sides of feet though. All down to how we land each step and footwear. Do you do every other day? And how long between your day 3 and day 1 do you leave? Maybe just allow one extra rest day and see how that feels.

It may have been hill walking that did it tbh (walking down it anyway). I've had Sat/Sun off so think I should be ok. It's not really pain, prob a 0.5 on a scale of 1 to 10.

I've done the fat burning programs since March and was ok then. Only started hill walking recently tho...

Think I land quite lightly. Bit worried about joints so make an effort to.

How are you liking the fat burning programs? I got really annoyed with them when they kept telling me to slow down and my heart rate was nowhere near the 'fat burning zone'. Plus it's not like I walk particularly fast either.

I find it a lot more work than regular flat running thats for sure. Even for a shorter time. Its a lot more like running outdoor which is good. IT started off a bit slow on the treadmills we use (Matrix) . For example the indicator is on a tall bar (suggesting going up hill) yet the incline stays at zero. isnt till the 3rd bar it goes to 2% and then 3%. Once youre going its fine. Usually a 20 min run and i have the pace set much higher than the 30 mins runs i was doing for C25K. I feel more like ive worked out after and its great. I usually do a 15 min row or 20 min cycle after with some weights.

Blood pressure when i check seems to be around the 170s at highest point but comes down rather quick to the low 120s during cooldown. :)

Oh, wow you run it! That's fab and not something I could manage yet! It's a lot different walking up those inclines! Not sure what it is in percentages, usually a 3.5 or 4 incline

Depends how bad it is. I (and many others) experienced sore shins in the early weeks. This is normal but be mindful it does not become more. Provided you utilise your rest days, and take another rest day if you feel you should then it probably wont get any worse and the symptoms will sort themselves out.

However, just for reference I will leave this here: nhs.uk/conditions/shin-spli...

Thanks. Seems to be better today. Will try some strengthening exercises on rest days 😊
