Today I completed wk6 run3 (woohoo!!) but when I stopped running I had pins and needles in my right leg for about 5 minutes. Any ideas why?

Hi Helen,

Well done on Week 6 Run 3! Was it on the warm down walk you had the pins and needles or once you got home? Was it the whole or your right leg or near your foot?

I'm wondering a couple of things, if it's connected to your shoe being tied to tight? Or if you are taking any sort of medication that might cause it? Just a coincidence, but this past month I have started a new medication and one of the side effects is pins & needles in my hands/arms and legs/feet particularly when I'm active.

If it's just a one off I wouldn't worry too much, but if it keeps happening again, it might be worth making a visit to the GP, just to get it checked out. Not to scare you (and this is something I don't know a lot about so obviously professional advice is best) but pins and needles are not only signs of something off with circulation e.g. when you get a dead leg, but can be connected to your spine and nervous system and be a sign that something is wrong there. I'm only saying this, that if the problem does persist to make sure your do go see a GP rather than leave it or put off a visit.

I am not a doctor so can't give that sort of advice. I have not heard it mentioned before so its not something that I have been advised about on my c25k journey.

Was something too tight restricting blood? I find that some of my socks can make my feet go cold. I stopped using those socks. I also believe pins and needles can be brought on by vibrations - perhaps you need trainers with more cushioning. Contradicting that - leggings/tights/compression tops are supposed to be good for your circulation so it can't all be about things being too tight.

It is never usually helpful to worry but I know how something like this might nag at your thoughts. I think if it happens again i'd give NHS direct a call and see what they think (although probably they will ask you to go and see the doctor ; in my experience that is always the outcome unless you have something very run of the mill).

Thanks. I did wk7 r1 today and had no pins and needles. I think maybe my trainers were done up too tightly! Will have to see...
