So I like to run early morning, but what do pe... - Couch to 5K
So I like to run early morning, but what do people suggest to eat before?I used to run on nothing but i'm progressing so i cannot do that :/
I have some tea and a banana. I run early mornings and can't cope with anything heavier.
I can only speak for myself here but, even though I'm only on Wk5, I have to have something to eat at least an hour before I go out for my run otherwise it just feel like I don't have any energy.
Personally I get up specifically early so I can have either banana or cereal etc. Sometimes I just have a SlimFast shake as I'm using those for dieting anyway and it's got what I need it it for breakfast. I also try and drink a decent amount of water in the hour or so before I got out.
I try to go out for my run as soon as it's light enough, which means getting up at some ridiculous time, but I already get up at a pretty ridiculous time to start work anyway...
I'm not very good with what foods are good for what but I guess something with some decent carb content to give you some energy. Experiment with a few things and write down how you felt afterwards and you'll probably work out what works for you and what doesn't.
Just coffee for me!
Then I wolf some good cereal down as soon as I get in and a pint of squash (and maybe more coffee). When I start doing real mileage then maybe I'll need more, but at the moment I (only) cover 5-6k so don't feel I need togo crazy.
This does depend on having a decent dinner and sleep the night before too!
Just water for me, but if I'm aiming to run for more than half an hour then I take some jelly type sweets with me because sometimes I get a bit light headed.
We run early morning too but the most I could ever think of eating is half a banana. I always have a cup of tea 30 minutes before I run. Apparently we don't need to load up with carbs until we're doing much more than 5k.
MAke yourself a vegetable juice if you have a juicer. I've got one and chuck all sorts of stuff in it before a run and it's amaaaaaaaazing.
I used to eat a banana about 45 minutes before my run (the more 'green' the better, as they are slow burn, the speckly brown ones are already breaking down the carbs so better for after a run as they metabolise faster). Now I eat nothing mostly, and am running up to 8 miles at least once a week. Unless I skipped dinner the night before, I've not needed anything, but we're all different, so you would need to experiment. I drink plenty of water when I wake and have a cuppa usually, too. I do carry a tracker or naked bar just in case I need it, but haven't so far, although once or twice I've eaten one on my cool down walk, if I set off later than usual.
Good luck with it
I eat 50g of porridge 2 hours before an early run. That always sets me up for a nice run. However when I have a long slow run in the morning of less than 10km I have a late dinner (after 8pm) and then only have a banana and water before running. Try a few different things and see what works for you.
something light toast with peanut butter jam banana coffee ok but try and have a hour or so be 4 hope this helps
I never eat breakfast and always run on empty. Just off for a run now and I won't be eating until early evening as it's my fasting day (500 calories) of the week.
I have run a couple times - about an hour after I have woken up and have been fine with just a cup of tea. However as my runs have become longer (ie more than 20 minutes) I find I need to moisten my mouth. I tried a small bottle of water on Saturday but found the slopping water noise (in the bottle) a bit annoying. Any suggestions?
Two cups of coffee and one slice of cheese such as Emmentaal or Jarlsberg. It's just enough to fuel me - I can't run if I've had a proper breakfast because it sits too heavily in my stomach. Mind, I'm not running very far - only for about 30 mins max so I guess if you're going further you might need more.
