Hi Sumixam,

Thank you for posting in Colon Cancer Connected. The FIT test looks for blood in the stool.

You shouldn't be surprised your FIT turned out positive as you've already noticed blood in your stool two weeks ago.

A positive result should be followed up with a colonoscopy to see what is causing the issue. There are may reason for a positive FIT and it's not necessarily cancer. So many other things could be going on.

You should feel good having this information now. It's catching things early and your doctor should be scheduling further testing to determine what is causing this. You are doing all the right things.

Please don't panic. You are doing well. You are getting the information you need. You need to focus on finding out the cause.

I wish you all the best. Work with your doctor and get more information.

Thank You,

~Tom, GCCA Survivor - Colon Cancer Connected Site Administrator.

Hi, high FIT means presence of blood in your stool, it is not a cancer marker. Although being as one of the initial testa that should prompt a person to more thorough investigation - colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, it is not a cancer indicator. Far from it. Bowel cancer does not have definite tell-tale signs and even a combination of many obvious symptoms increases posibility only slightly. Vast majority of people with worrying symptoms do not have cancer and age plays a major role. If you do not suffer any other major systemic symptoms (e.g. weight loss) and you are below 40 , chances are extremely low. But you want to know source of bleeding as therr is myriad of other intestinal issues that need to be resolved. Malignancy or not, it should be examined properly. In the meantime do not stress ;)

Good luck! I know that although a chance of having cancer is rather small, as rectal bleeding is very common, but proper examination is key and the best prevention, as well. Internal haemmorhoids, fissures and polyps are all too common, but you want to get rid off them before they can lead to some malignancy. All the best!

Hi, I can say that a positive FIT test does not always mean cancer. Mine was quite high at 147. As it says above 10 is the marker for further tests I was worried out of my mind. Fortunately I have diverticulosis, had four benign polyps taken away and biopsies which were fine, no cancer. I have haemorrhoids, have had them for years. I now will have a colonoscopy every three years. Good luck with your colonoscopy. One thing I will say is make sure you take all the prep and follow advice on what to eat the day before prep day. Not great but it clears you out and the surgeon can get a good view of your intestines and not miss anything. Some people have had to have a second colonoscopy if they are not clear. Best wishes

Hi, not sure if you are referring to me or Sumixam. Anyway will say I have loose stools at times which for me is more due to my diverticuloses. This was confirmed by colonoscopy. I have blood only when my haemorrhoids play up. If you are experiencing these symptoms. Have you been to a Doctor. Colonoscopy is the best way of knowing what is wrong. If you are under 50 some GPs will try to fob you off but you must insist on having tests. Mind you a positive FIT test should put on the the 2 week pathway. So if you have not sought medical advice yet do asap. Best wishes

I think like others say its just the level of blood in your stool. My FIT was sky high at 400. But I knew I had bleeding so no big surprise. When the surgeon found my tumour in the colonoscopy he did say 400 was a very high score and he had a feeling there may be "pathology". But I'm not sure to be honest. I know that some people can have low scores (just over the threshold to be referred) and have bc so I don't know. I wouldn't worry yourself about the FIT score. You just need to get colonoscopy, it's the only way you will get answers. I wish you the best of luck xx
