Anyone also have ibs ? I've read that it can be connected to cmt. I've had bowel problems for years.

Why should IBS be connected with CMT, I don't understand the logic? I have never read of any connection between the two conditions

I would have thought IBS was connected to diet, rather than the peripheral nervous system. I have heard that IBS can also be associated with stress.

Dear Rowantree,

I too have IBS, but it had never occurred to me that the two things could be connected. As with the other two people who have answered your question, I cannot see any logical reason why there should be a connection. Unfortunately having CMT does not preclude us from having other uncomfortable diseases.

Best wishes,

REGreen

I have had CMT since childhood, and at 68 years of age :

Recently discovered that German Scientists are linking CMT complications with Gluten,

(a protein substance present in cereal grains, especially wheat, that is responsible for the elastic texture of dough):

They have discovered something about gluten affecting the Myelin Sheath, and that it might be linked to CMT muscle pain and degeneration.

I am sensitive/allergic to gluten, and lately have become careless about avoiding it. I am now having leg cramps and muscle swelling. Not pleasant. I am going off gluten with a higher level of commitment now after hearing of the German discovery.

I too have CMT and IBS with diarrhea. I take Imodium daily, plus a probiotic. They don't always help. I'm hunting to see if there is a nerve connection.
