Anti-gravity treadmill is helping me...

Don't want to get too excited, but I have used an AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill at a local gym twice in the last fortnight, and am finding it very beneficial. The treadmill works by using air pressure to 'remove' some of your weight. I walked on it at only 50% of my body weight, and it can be turned down as low as 20%, when you are virtually floating! There is no possibility of falling, and the trainer who owns the gym gave me advice on my gait, which was helpful.

At 70 (my CMT was diagnosed 20 years ago), I entered the gym for the first time with my usual hesitant steps, head down for fear of falling, and leaning heavily on my walking stick. On my second visit I walked a mile on the treadmill, with none of the resultant aches, pains and exhaustion which would have accompanied covering this distance in the 'real' world.

The sense of confidence the treadmill gives definitely carries on when you leave the gym, and I can't wait to get back on it again next week – I would love to 'run' on it, even for a short distance, something I have only been able to do in dreams for many years!

Apparently the top premiership football teams use these machines for rehab. I am very lucky to find myself living near one, since I gather there are only a few in private gyms around the UK. They can be found via alter-g.com

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you and hope that you continue to see benefit from this specific type of treadmill. i have checked out the site and there isn't a gym anywhere near me so I will be unable to try one. Shame but that's how it goes.

Best of luck!

It's great to hear some good news. I regularly walk 4kms down a steep mountainside, which I love. However, must admit, don't like walking up, which only happens when I miss the bus!
