Numb Face

Has anyone experienced numbness in one side of their face? Before you say stroke I went through this several weeks ago, went to the emergency room & they called for a stroke alert. Next thing I was having a cat scan, & that's just the beginning. I ended up spending 11days in the hospital, most of them in ICU. Every time I fell asleep it was time for another test MRI etc. After I was "sprung" I got home & felt great, maybe a little tired but in a few days that passed. Now this morning it's dejevu all over again. Right side of my face is numb again. I would get on the roof & jump but with a one story home I would just break my leg & still have a numb face. I've talked with my primary care physician & right now I'm in a wait & see. If no change by tomorrow it's time to go to University neurologist. I saw a neurologist during my 11 day hospital stay but he kinda ho hum no stroke. I don't know if he even took into consideration CMT. Help fellow CMT friends.

Can't say I've felt anything like that I do get the top of my head feel numb but I don't think it's the CMT I wish you luck with getting it sorted just to say I've never heard anyone else complain of this either. Good luck 🍀🍀

Hi Pam. Facial numbness is not an issue I've heard associated with CMT, but who knows? There are so many different symptoms and it's all neurological after all! I don't have facial numbness but I've definitely lost my smile, and for physical not emotional reasons. If I look back at photos from the past I used to have a big toothy grin. These days I always tend to look sullen and miserable, which I really am not. If I try to smile for the camera it just comes out looking like a grimace. I put this down to gradual loss of muscle-control in my face due to CMT. I chose the profile photo you can see because it's one of the very few recent ones that looks vaguely reasonable.

Good luck getting the numbness resolved, please let us know the outcome.

Best wishes Malc

Thx Malc, the latest is that I'm going to an ear specialist. I've seen every other doctor under the sun. The numbness is in front of my ear, the ear & the scalp area behind the ear. So Thursday maybe I'll know something different. I had a cat scan of my head & MRI & no reason for numbness. It went away and several weeks later came back. Rats! This getting old is not for sissies. It's always something.

A friend of mine (not a fellow CMT'r) recently had a numb face & slight droop to his mouth. His GP thinks it may be very mild case of Bell's Palsy. Good luck.

Thankfully no droop.

Hi, there are other conditions related to a numb face, the 2 that I know are Bell's Palsy (which will resolve itself in time) and Trigeminal Neuralgia which is inflammation of the trigeminal nerve in the face. I had Trigeminal Neuralgia which lasted 18 months, but would say more like pain than numbness. Numbness sounds very much more like nerve damage. Have you had any dental treatment recently? I went to the Dental Hospital and after extensive searching was diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia. I feel very strongly that if CMT causes nerve damage then why not cause numbness in the face, I get numb toes, but only 1/2 at a time and then reverts to tingling then normal, it is so weird. I hope you get to the root of this problem soon. X
