hi, my husbands diagnosis has now been changed... - CLL Support
hi, my husbands diagnosis has now been changed toi cd5 positive splenic marginal zone lymphoma can any tell me if this is better or worse
Very rare subset of SMZL...it is considered indolent...you can't compare it to CLL, every patient is different...
Here is a recent paper on it...
Thank you for your quick reply as a novice to this it will take me a while to understand it
I don't profess to understand this variation landlady and I know there's no promises but the one sentence that stood out for me in reading about your husband's SMZL, is the one that says 'it's commonly an indolent disease' with indications of much greater longevity.
I'd be taking great hope from that. Hope all goes well for him.

There is an extensive SMZL section at lymphomation.org that may be useful lymphomation.org/type-mz.ht...
Dr Sharman wrote briefly about SMZL in his blog and mentioned that it is often confused at diagnosis with CLL. cll-nhl.com/2012/12/the-slo...
Here is an excellent discussion on this subject... CD5 positive is a rare subset
Dear Landlady,
as your husbands team have found, CD5+ non CLL diseases can be difficult to tell apart from CLL. It is actually quite a tricky area.
In terms of what it means for your husband, as always, it is not one parameter alone that is important, but the whole picture - the blood count, lymph nodes and an enlarged spleen - his general condition, are things stable or changing, Cytogenetics (although not much used for SMZL).
When you put all this together, it gives a better idea of assessing the overall prognosis.
SMZL, like CLL, is a disease with a spectrum of behaviour from patient to patient. As said by others, it is a type of "indolent" lymphoma.
Hi Thanks for replying. Yes I think things are changing as he seems more tired but this could be due to the uncertainty and trying to cope with the situation, he has an appointment with another specialist next week so hopefully they will be able to give us a better insight to what we are dealing with
