Full body sun exposure in season, at a time when your shadow length equals your height. I do 1 hr usually everyday. Cod liver, cod liver oil, fresh fish. I'm taking a vitamin d pill during winter but I quit when I start sunbathing. Never had a problem with kidney stones. If proper vitamin d levels reduce the chances of melanoma then sunbathing does the same if done correctly.

vitamin K2 is an important cofactor of D3, and will aid in putting D in the "right spots", remember you CAN'T take K2 if you're on blood thinners

This paper, especially sections 5.2 on vitamin D supplementation and 6 conclusions, is worth reading ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

The gist is that kidney stone risk is multifactorial, and the role of vitamin D supplement is controversial partly because in many studies the results are confounded by other risk factors. Representative of the general population, a large, placebo controlled study showed no increased risk in a group given 100,000 IU / month with 3.3 years follow up. Other studies show that supplementary vitamin D does increase the risk of kidney stones in people predisposed to hypercalciuria.
