covid vaccination confusion (uk only)

Thanks to everyone who supports and contributes to this site.

I have read that those with CLL should have 3 primary courses then two boosters - or 2x 2 primary course of two doses then one booster. Not sure.

however:

Prediagnosis i had primary course plus booster so 3 doses. It appears I can only get a booster in UK. Neither GP or NHS booking line could clarify. I spoke to the pharmacy direct and they said as long as i have had my original primary course it is just a booster now (and any way its the same bivalent vaccine).

So hopefully clarifies for those like me newly diagnosed. Of course if the pharmasists advice is wrong i want to know but i need the evidence to fight my way through the ignorance of the nhs establishment.

I`ve now had 6 covid jabs. First 2 were full doses of Pfizer, 3 half doses of moderna and the latest bi variant one which was Pfizer again.

Times between has varied according to the guidelines at the time but last 3 have all been at 12 weeks or over.

If you are eligible then you should be able to book on the NHS booking site. If it`s not time then you won`t be able to book.

I`ve had text messages as well telling me to get booked. Are you under the care of a specialist?.....nurse specialist that you can for info? They should be up to date with any and all info regarding vaccines.

No idea if this is info you want but hopes it gives you some clarification.

Take care

thank you. Perhaps my post wasnt that clear. I am questioning the difference between ‘primary course’ and ‘booster’. Which is referenced in the pinned posts. Perhaps the difference is in the type of vaccine, but for the ‘newly CLL diagnosed, but up to date on covid vaccinations’ (as I am). The advice on here that you need to have 5 vaccinations (or even 6), seems to be misleading. It may be right for those with CLL pre covid, but not for me.

Anyone can book on the nhs website you just ‘select’ immune deficient. You can also use walk-ins on same basis. What you cant see is what vaccine you will get and the pharmacist verbally confirmed booster or primary, its all bivalent now. Is the timing different between doses different for primary (say if you elected not to get vaccinated at any point since 2021)? Maybe. With CLL should we get boosters every 3 or 6 mths? Dont know. But the advice on here to get ‘6 doses’ doesnt apply to me it seems.

My consultants letter just said ‘get covid vaccine’.

Hi Saju21,

The advice for the latest booster dose in the UK states :

"The autumn booster vaccine dose should be offered at least 3 months after the previous dose."

gov.uk/government/publicati...

My reading of that document is that the bivalent vaccine is the preferred booster vaccine at this time in the UK. However, if it isn't available, a monovalent vaccine is preferred to none at all.

Don't worry so much about the number of vaccines you've had so much as whether you are eligible for your next vaccine. If you are eligible, get whatever vaccine is available to you in a timely manner. If there is a choice of more than one type of vaccine, aim to get whichever one your doctors tell you is the most suitable for you as an immunocompromised person.

If I understand you correctly, you've only recently been diagnosed with CLL and you have had three vaccines to date. Based on the UK advice, I'd say that, if it is at least three months since your last vaccine, you are eligible for another vaccine and it will most likely be the bivalent one.
