Having some left rib pain. Thought I was having spleen enlargement but my MSK doc said I am too early in CLL for that to happen and had me go to a PCP. PCP said I was the third person that week to come in with rib pain and it’s not my spleen. Just an arthritis like condition. I had the third Covid vaccine and wonder if anyone else here had the third shot and had rib pain after???

I’ve had recurring Costochondritis (refers to inflammation of the cartilage that attaches your ribs to your breastbone). I’ve had this from a very young age and lately have been experiencing pain under my left ribs despite being in full remission and my spleen not being enlarged. I’ve had a bad cough recently and I suspect coughing has aggravated it. I also have arthritis which makes it more likely. The vaccines didn’t impact.

I’m also wondering if you’ve had any gastric upset as gastritis can also be implicated. This refers to inflammation of the lining of your stomach, which is also near the left side of your rib cage.

Sometimes these things come and go and are difficult to pin down but it’s important to monitor spleen size and activity during ‘active’ CLL. My spleen became double in size prior to treatment and was checked using ultrasound.

I have had Intercostal Neuralgia ( aka Chest Wall Pain) off and on for several years (spinal nerve involvement nerves causing pain in rib cage ares-- upper chest/back (wraps around). The causes are varied—mine have been from nerve entrapment. One other cause can be from viral infection of Shingles.

The 3 vaccine doses I have had did not trigger any pain for me.

I’ve had right sided rib discomfort for a few years. The discomfort only happens when I’m laying on my back. Finally my local oncologist/hematologist ran ultrasound on me. The results were my liver was enlarged pushing on my spleen causing that to become enlarged as well. He put me on a no sugar very low sodium diet. After 3 months he repeated the ultrasound and my spleen was Back to normal size and my liver was just slightly enlarged.

I was also being seen at MSK at this time and my complaint was dismissed. In the past 7 months I switched to another Cll specialist closer to me. I’m not downing MSK I think there great, but my local oncologist was proactive and found the issue that could have become a real problem.

Best wishes

John

Hi Mend123 My breast/ rib pain came on heavy after my booster Just had an examination of breast and chest wall several weeks ago and my doctor at Stanford wrote

"possible COVID Booster" as her assessment in the notes... I am FOR the vax but the booster was more than I could handle AND it's not going away. I won't be doing anymore Covid shots in the future
