How big a threat are mutated forms of Covid19 found on mink farms in Denmark? According to an article published today https//nature.com/articles/d41586-... it's complicated and some earlier reports were premature.
What surprises me is how widespread is SARS-COV2 of mink origin in Denmark's human population: about 300 variants, in 1/5 of the country's recorded Covid cases.
Scientists are still looking at the data, but as yet there is no reason to believe that mink-derived virus variants will defeat vaccines currently in development, even though some mutations involve the gene coding for the spike protein.
Mink, though, is just one of a number of species vulnerable to infection with Covid, and what has happened in Denmark should serve as an early warning. No, on second thoughts, how many warnings do we need?
