Has anyone ever had a private employer Bupa plan transfer to personal, and what was the status to continue to cover cancer?

wasn't this answered before or is this question somewhat different?

Yes I did.

I think I had to go on to a personal policy which wasn't as good as before.

So I am covered for new stuff but not pre existing in order to keep the price reasonable. Same provider though.

It did cover my skin cancer which was new (as a result of cll) as I wanted an excision of the lesion quicker than NHS offered

A lot depends on your previous employer cover as to what happens when you transfer to a personal BUPA cover. In my case the cover offered was identical including pre-existing but was about three times more expensive than alternative quotations which did not, of course, give pre-existing cover. The BUPA premium could be reduced by changing waiting periods, excesses and hospital levels.

I left a company scheme to restart self employment. Rather than set up a personal plan the benefit provider managed to add me to a group scheme set up for small companies and individuals. The group scheme pooled costs and risk (most existing members were younger than me) which created a 25% discount on a personal scheme and allowed me to transfer with pre-existing conditions. My known CLL continued to be covered. I got a great deal, maybe because as Group VP HR I had been the benefit provider's client and had a good working relationship. However, it might be worth talking to your current employer's provider to explore the possibility of options with them before starting over and losing the significant benefit of carrying pre-existing conditions into your new scheme.

Best wishes and good luck

Michael
