I have heard nothing but good things about UMass but nothing on their transplant department. Just recently I learned of their cutting edge in the area of ALS. I have a friend that has dealt with breast cancer and other issues and she is more then pleased.

I personal checked out Loyola of Chicago for transplant and that was very good, also Dana Farber in Boston. I had a friend go to Baylor in TX....there are several good places.

a year ago i went to dana farber for transplant consult. they even found me a 10 point match. However -due to outside reasons- if i have a transplant i want it at Umass Woecester-not dana farber

You need togo where you have the confidence in the establishment and the personnel!

I was very fortunate and chose not to do a transplant and now I don’t need to even consider it as I got very lucky and now at 78 I am too old!!! Best of luck in whatever you chose to do! Please keep our community posted!

i have confidence in dana farber. i said the reason had nothing to do with transplant itself. also you are not to old for allogenic reduced intensity transplant.

You are much more medically knowledgeable than I am so I would not question your decision/need to use UMass. My daughter went to school in Worcester and I know it has a good reputation. You might find out from the doc bios who has done recent research on gvhd. My husband was in his 70s when he had his transplant and he was warned about gvhd - he selected doc based on that. He ended up with only minor issues. 4 years later he is 75 and goes to the gym and runs.

I had a 10/10 match and it comes from a global registry. So if Dana Farber found a match, that same donor will be available to you irrespective of the transplant center.

That is my understanding based on the discussion with the medical team pre-transplant.

I am based in Canada but we are covered for transplant in US in case the wait time is too long here. So I think US system will be the same.

i was told that also. However it;s been a year. Just need to check when i'm there.

I grew up in Worcester. Interesting that the headquarters of Abbvie, which distributes ibrutinib, is right next to the UMass medical school on Shrewbury St. Maybe you can get them to lower the price???
